I think it deserves a higher rating than 3. I mean it is a 5/1 attacker with haste, or 3/3 or 4/2. It gets especially good with pump spells. Put a giant growth on it and it's 6/6, so you can give it +5/-5 and it's suddenly a 11/1 instead of a 3/3. Or put a slagwurm armor on it. Then you can have anything between a 3/9 and a 11/1.
Not tournament quality, but great in red-green decks.

It's just a meh card. maybe it was sorta playable back in its day, but without trample or a way to reverse its ability (for a + to toughness) it's just a waste of 5 mana. Ball Lightning is much better for what you want it to do, and it has just enough toughness to get wiped by most damage spells.

I would combo this with Might of Oaks and Berserk .
1 )Might of Oaks makes him 10/10 2) Adjust if needed to (19/1 for example) 3) Berserk for a 38/1 trampler
Even if the opponent has blockers, he'll get squashed

Hellions are older creatures which are like giant, red, worms. They tend to breathe fire.
this is how flowstone should have worked, if all flowstone cards we're like this one I would go ahead and make a flowstone deck.

with about face, she gets -1/+1 infinitely many times. Then you make something with her toughness. Gain life, deal damage, make mana, draw cards.

The first Hellion. :-D It's still pretty fun to use, considering its age.

One upon a time it was a key combo card involving Volrath's Shapeshifter, Survival of the Fittest, and Phyrexian Dreadnought. You'd swing with the Shapeshifter, use Survival to search for and/or pitch a Flowstone Hellion, activate its ability 11 times, then search for a Phyrexian Dreadnought before the abilities resolved, and hit your opponent with a 23/1 shapeshifter. It sounds difficult to pull off but due to the fact that having Survival of the Fittest in play was enough to fetch the rest of the pieces, it wasn't really. Shenanigans such as these led to the eventual ban of Survival of the Fittest from Extended.
