why is this the only card out of the five that's not an instant?

That's true, but I think it's just a bad design on wizards part. They made the entire cycle have 2 mana which ended up giving the cards drastically varying power levels. Echoing truth is way too good, for example.

Remember that, at the time Artifact lands were rampant, thus making this a powerful land destruction spell, that's a major reason behind making it Sorcery speed, in addition to the presence of Shatter.

Goes nicely with my Artifact / Land destruction deck. With mycosynth out I wipe their board for lands, otherwise I can remove 1 land for each coating / landshaper in play for 2 mana, excellent!

And why the low rating of GooberSnotpants's comment? Myr Landshaper targeting a basic land is devasting with this! Potentially even more so than the same trick with Splinter.
