This was the original "broken" card in my play circle back in the days of only Alpha and Beta. If you managed to obtain a whole playset of them, nobody ever wanted to play you (ante was still played for too so games really meant something!); turn 1 Black Vise followed by a turn 2 Black Vise was absolutely devastating! The other "broken" card was Sinkhole, and the two of them combined... kiss you ante goodbye!

I actually had fun building a casual deck based around having this card deal lasting damage. 4 of these with Mishra's Helix and Psychic Venom, with some Sign in Bloods for good measure. Keep their hand full by tapping their lands (hopefully Psychic Venomed ones), Sign in Blood to keep their hand big, and I even threw in an Ankh of Mishra to persuade them not to play lands out of their hand. Fun deck. Can't use in a legal format, though. Restrictions-BAH!

For those of you who did not play back when this was in the core set, it's important to know a few things:
- There were not many ways of dealing damage on the first turn. This did so, in potentially any color deck. - The game was much slower, and land destruction was plentiful and cheap. Strip Mine, Sinkhole and Ice Storm are not easy cards to recover from early in the game. This meant your hand might be close to full often, and you might be taking damage from the vise every turn. - While White had Disenchant, Red had Shatter, and Green had Crumble, Black had next to no ways to permanently deal with artifacts, and Blue could also have problems with this.
