Counters any creature, any bestow, or Underworld Connections. That's quite an upgrade from Essence Scatter if you can afford the double blue.

For Standard, this is pretty solid. Unless you are playing 3 or more colors, you can probably afford to swap out any Essence Scatters for these.

If someone uses this to counter one of your gods with the devotion active, you can respond to kill one of your dudes to make the god not a creature again and thus make the spell fizzle.

This does work on the gods, anywhere but on the battlefield they will be creatures, regardless of your devotion. So no, you cannot kill your own creatures to make them not a creature.
