"One generic mana". That sounds pretty cool.

My dad has been playing since around revised, he still calls it "generic mana", the old fogey.

Generic mana? No sir, I buy the name-brand mana, even though it costs more. It's a matter of principle.

If it's not 'generic mana' what it is then?

Honestly a pretty decent card - double value for Affinity artifact decks.

"All spells in each player's hand have affinity for Helm of Awakening"

Get two of these out, third and fourth for free, Vedalken Orrery for free, get a Grinding Station, kill the Orrey, but flash in 4 Sphere of Resistance in response, when each one resolves kill a Helm with the Station.

RESULTS: Spells cost 4 more to play. Oh, and you get a tapped Grinding Station and mill for 15. All for 3 and 10 cards!

How does this interact with X spells? I've never been able to figure this out. If I'm Fireballing someone for 5 with this in play, do I only have to pay 4 for X? In other words, does this automatically add +1 to all X effects? Or are X costs just unaffected by it?

I wasn't sure about that too. Checking the rules shows that cost modifiers are applied AFTER everything else, so if you wanted to flashback something or pay an X cost, it indeed works that way.
