"The first version of this card was 'Savannah Unicorn,' a 2/3 for 1WG with the 'Spirit Link' ability. Playtesting proved that to be quite strong, and it was adjusted to a 2/2 for 2WG." Since then, they've printed a 2/3 with flying, deathtouch, AND lifelink at uncommon. Power creep FTW.

The only Lifelink hard to predate this is El-Hajjâj... I think. This guy manages to be a bit better, due to being big enough to make a difference on the field. Also note that Lifelink fits on both white and black cards, and for flavor, it should be green as well. It's not often that you see early cards that mamage to be spot-on, color-wise, when having rare effects.

@atemu1234: They try not to change the way a card works when creating oracle text. If they changed this card's ability to Lifelink, you could not use it with cards like Lifelink (the card) and Mark of the Vampire and double the effect.
Basically, giving this card Lifelink would cause it to become (very slightly) worse, because it would no longer stack with Lifelink granted from another source.

I think the thing that bothers me the most is that they changed the original "Love Song of Night and Day" text to fit this card. It was originally flying instead of gentle in the poem. Seriously, how much better would a zebra unicorn be if it flew?
