Umm... that is the wrong artwork for this version.

I've always wondered why an abbey matrons point and scream at me. Maybe it's because they are pained at their own uselessness?

This is one of if not the most useless card that Magic has ever made because you not only have to have one of these stupid cards but you have to have more so they actually work.

As long as you leave a plains untapped, Abbey Matron is a 1/6 blocker - big enough to keep the mighty Eron the Relentless at bay! It lacks decent attack power, but with so many underpowered creatures in the set, this old lady can hold her own in combat.

Typical Homelands trash. This whole set in general was terrible even when it was new.

Hey! Wow what a great card! For the price of just one mana, I can give it extra toughness.. and theen make that toughness USELESS!

I remember this card being made fun of frequently in Inquest.

Doran, the Siege Tower? She'd need vigilance though... Too much work...

The extra toughness isn't useless. You declare them as a blocker, then tap for the toughness. Perfectly legal play.

What she's saying is
"Ha-Ha! A b1tch like you can't even get by an underpowered blocker like me! SUCK IT!"

Terrible. All that effort just to get a big, tapped wall. Great...

Man. The amount of people who don't get you can use tap effects before damage assignment is just shameful. I mean yeah this isn't a very great card, but within Homelands it's perfectly serviceable. About all it can't safely block on the ground is Ihshan's Shade.

HA! I love the idea of planeswalkers protecting themselves from ferocious monsters by summoning a crotchety old woman to stop them dead in their tracks by scolding them.

"Now see here, Gutwrencher Oni!" You are going to show some manners if you want to set foot in THIS house! So help me Serra, I will NOT have my evening prayers disrupted by singing blood. And close your mouth when you snarl, we don't need to see your sorry excuse for dental hygiene every time you get hungry."

"Well I never! Bringer of the Black Dawn, don't you DARE trample all over my new carpet! And stand up straight, your posture is an embarrassment to us all."

"For shame, Insatiable Souleater! You haven't even finished your last meal of devoured souls and you're already back for more? You take one more step toward me, and as Serra is my witness, I will KILL you with my bare hands! And comb your hair, you look like you just rolled out of bed."

I would say that the toughness boost is useful because it makes it bolt-proof, but that makes it less useful, because if this was on my side of the field, I would want it getting bolted to relieve me of the pain of such monstrosity.

Wow, I can't believe she is shooting with a finger gun. I guess anything goes in the multiverse.

Man, I just realized... back in the day, tapped blockers couldn't deal damage... This card was actually incredibly useless, back in the day.

Before I forget, I mentioned Pemmin's Aura because late-game in a UW deck? Abbey Matron has the potential to become, say, a 6/7 with flying and shroud using this enchantment. Takes a lot of mana to tap and untap, but like I said: Late Game.

This card was made for loving. I'm so happy it has been printed. It'll forever have a place in my Doran EDH deck.

I have no idea why people think this card is so bad. While it's base stats as a common rarity 1/3 for {2}{W} is one mana more than most modern 1/3 commons, it has an ability that is pretty relevant to defense and makes sure that it can still be a decent blocker later in the game when your normal 1/3 for {2} is no longer a viable defense.
If I would do anything to this card it would replace the ability with a trigger like "Whenever this card blocks it gains +3 toughness until end of turn." That way it's ability stays useful in a multiplayer game where you may have to block more than once before your next turn.

Maybe everyone forgot that blocking doesn't tap a creature? It's the reason that samite healer eats goblins for breakfast.

If you think Homelands isn't a good set, you don't truly understand the power held within it. Why else would they make Apocalypse Chime?

Because they knew that an all Homelands deck would be so strong, there needed to be a card you could carry at the ready to destroy the power of the Homelands.

Homelands...the best set in MtG.

Picture this: The attacker charges at you, then an old lady runs up and starts ranting at it, eventually leaving it baffled enough that it just sorta turns around and shuffles away awkwardly.

One of the best things about this card is that it reveals how many Magic players don't understand how the blocking rules work.
