Within the set, goes well with Scroll Thief.
Outside it... new merfolk staple?

Lord of Atlantis: *Sniff*

Now that that's out of the way, this is going to serve as a great lord in Merfolk decks, alongside the original BAMF himself.

How many lords does it take to make a tribe good? How about how many 2 mana lords? Yea, Legacy Merfolk just got +4 friends.

Sadly, this needs a bunch of Merfolk in RTR to be decent in standard.

doesn't really work in standard right now, but now you can run 8x lord of atlantis in legacy! :D

Compared to TimmyForever, I'm starting to actually like MasterOfEtherium...

Anyway, would have been cool if it was +1/+1 and gave itself the bonus.

Why? No idea. I've just always thought it was rather strange that lords usually don't give themselves their type bonus (at a reduced core power and toughness, of course). That's why I like the Warchiefs.

At least MOE had some constructive things to say. TimmyForever is just a failure troll.

For those saying you can run him as a second Lord of Atlantis in legacy, Lord of Atlantis was time shifted and is also modern legal as well...

This card isnt as bad as u think in standard atm. Mono blue delver is a deck. So u run this with merfolk of pearld trident, delver, snap, augur, scroll, theif and phantasmal image. you get a decnt army with island walk.

All they need to do is reprint Spreading Seas, and everything's golden.

Legacy Merfolk decks, here's Lord of Atlantis 5-8. And this one is strictly better.

If your doing a 2v2, and you and your buddy both have merfolk decks, you would rather have Lord of Atlantis.

Bazinga, you can come up with a situation that voids the strictly better theory for any case.

@timmyforever This doesn't make them retarded, it makes them better. Quit rating cards based on the fact you lost to them.

If they reprint the Shock lands then there will be lots of islands for this guy to walk on. Even if they don't Simic, Izzet, Dimir, Azorius are all getting Islandwalked on anyway.

Again, more people who don't understand what the word "strictly" means when they say "strictly better". This is not strictly better than Lord of Atlantis. It is generally going to be better, but not always. As TheWrathofShane said, in team games where your teammates have merfolk and your opponents do not, this is not better than Lord of Atlantis. Or say that you need to Pthisis your opponent's Coralhelm Commander. Lord of Atlantis on your side would gain you more life. Or if your opponent is about to get the mana to activate Frostwind Invoker and the only other creature you have is Intrepid Hero. Lord of Atlantis lets you kill it, this does not. Therefore, it is not strictly better. That's almost only going to apply to a complete functional reprint where the mana cost is reduced, but even then you can make a case for the cards that count colored mana symbols or some other crap. The term is stupid.

@Arachnos Lord of Atlantis gives all Merfolk the bonus, this only gives your Merfolk the bonus.

Well, Simic is now run by a Merfolk lady now, which means that Gatecrash may hold a small amount of synergy for the new Lord of the Fish.

I find it curious that he himself doesn't have islandwalk. Not that it's a problem most of the time, especially if you get out multiples.

Here he is in a nice WU modern merfolk deck:

@Arachnos

Lord of Atlantis says "other merfolk" which can benefit your opponent's merfolk as well as your own, while Master of the Pearl Trident says "other merfolk creatures you control" which only boosts your own. That's why it's strictly better.

The reason this is strictly better than Lord of Atlantis is that there's no reason to use it over this unless you're in a team game where at least one of your teammates is playing Merfolk. Otherwise Lord of Atlantis is junk. That's why we hate "reprints" like these.

So this is identical to Lord of Atlantis... I guess you could run both in modern.
Snarblo
★★★☆☆ (3.5/5.0) (3 votes)
Not strictly better than Lord of Atlantis actually.

Vedalken Shackles, a popular modern card in Delver decks, can take control of this guy and make his ability useless. Lord of Atlantis still buffs up your merfolk even when your opponent controls him.

So there are actually some occasions, in modern even, where you want the original lord.

This card is absolutely amazing and that's why I have a small problem with it. I don't quite understand why blue is the colour that gets 2 2 mana lords. I never really thought blue was supposed to be aggressive and if any colour should have 2 mana lords it should be white. Perhaps I'm jealous because white weenies is my favourite type of deck but it just confused me. Blue already has such a massive part of the colour pie why does it have to get the most aggressive tribe as well? I know White has Crusade and Honor of the Pure but those aren't on aggressive bodies which makes them pretty different.

How is it strictly better than Lord of Atlantis, though? They are essentially the exact same card.

Oh right... "you control".
