If they really were arcane academies, they probably had wizards among their staff, so exactly how were they powerless against simple thieves?

No I don't think this card is strictly better than Ophidian. Ophidian at times presents your opponent with a choice, either lose a creature or give you a card (without any life loss). While most pros would gladly lose the creature, it's not always like that, it depends on how decks work and in which part of the match it happens. Also this let's you evaluate your opponent, his deck, the way he plays, possibly his hand. I thinks Scroll thief doesn't replace Ophidian as a inteligent blue card, and is itself easily replaceble by Thieving Magpie which acomplishes this the task a lot better thanks to flying. Think about it...

I thinks Scroll thief doesn't replace Ophidian as a inteligent blue card, and is itself easily replaceble by Thieving Magpie which acomplishes this the task a lot better thanks to flying.
