I could see this getting stupid with Trample or something due to it basically being advanced Firebreathing, but the expensive initial cost causes it to lose some playability.

Flash doesn't seem to pair well with then having to invest a bunch more mana. Doesn't save a creature since vampires generally need the toughness more than the power.

It took me a while to discover the utility of this card. I made a black/red aggro deck in a Dark Ascension draft. After I had assembled my deck, I needed a coaster, so I used a copy of Talons of Falkenrath.

This card is better than it looks. I don't foresee it setting standard on fire or anything, but it can be a nasty surprise late game, and one that no one ever seems to be expecting. Like most of Dark Ascension, it's at its best in Sealed/Draft.
