One of those cards which has to played to understand how truly, game-winningly awesome it is. You can't just read it and think you 'get' it.
I alwats liked the artwork and flavour text too, even if they're a bit 'generic fantasy' for my usual tastes.

Looks horrible until you get in a situation where you are in dire need of it.
I agree in the generic fantasy statement, but it is fairly unique as magic cards go.
Overall, 3.5/5

Ugh, back in the day this card + balance... if you were on the receiving end of the combo it was game over. The black summer of 1995... those were so NOT the days!

5/5. Winning combo piece. "Killing Gentleman" and "Harmful Stranger" are the two decks that break this card. I've seen it first turn. And it's something you don't soon forget.

I wish they would reprint this card! A truely awesome artifact! This baby has kept me alive just long enough for the game win so many times!

"Overall, 3.5/5" - I'm sorry, but that is the joke. This card deserves nothing less than a 5/5. I t costs nothing, and in the right deck can balance out the game play or keep you alive to destroy your opponent.

In the right decks (balance, necro, crucible) this is crazy.. but what really makes this card truly amazing is that you can put this in any deck and have life gain on demand.

The effect is rather poor on its own, but this is perhaps the best sacrifice outlet ever made. {0} cost, no other costs to use besides the sacrifice, and the 2 life just becomes gravy. The cards it usually gets paired with in these comments were all stupid ridiculous, but I have a feeling there are combos with saner cards that are still pretty crazy.
In the right deck.. overpowered. In the wrong deck... Can save you in a pinch.

Doesn't seem too strong on the surface, merely useful, but I am certain that in the right deck (or the right environment) it's a killer. I think the fact that it was banned/restricted demonstrates that well enough.
who doesn't get to the point in a game where drawing lands is just a frustration? this thing, regardless of what else it combos with, is so handy. an absolute staple with merfolk (you only need about six of those 20+ islands), green speed (the trick is to NOT sac the forest with all the enchantments on it), multi-multicolor (cleaning up the surplus to keep you alive), and pretty much any other deck, provided that sticking around for one or two more turns can mean the difference. at 0 cmc, the only investment is a slot in the deck, and if you can't give it that, you deserve what's coming to you.

"Sacrifice a land to gain 2 life" is pitch-perfect iambic pentameter.

Favorite card ever. Obviously broken, but it added so much fun to casual games in elementary school.

Neutralizes the pain of Dingus Egg, making an Armageddon deck more viable than ever.
Stretches out games til you can pull your bomb and win.
Grinds your opponents lands while you profit(In set: Orcish Squatters)
As before mentioned, a staple in the Necropotence deck, a favorite of Balance, and Crucible Of Worlds was the cherry on top for this.

Integral piece of an infinite life combo.
5/5, or you're stupid.
