Aww, poor Diregraf Ghoul. After being hunted so long, his power has gone down, and he's afraid of humans. He's gotten quicker, sure, but that's about it.
In all seriousness, a 1-drop zombie is a 1-drop zombie. Even with a downside (which won't be as big a deal outside of this block) 1/2 for 1 is pretty decent.

With this, the 1/1 undying dude at 2, and the printing of a strictly better Zombie Apocalypse hoser, it's pretty obvious AVR design team hates zombies.

This card is weak to tone down limited, for a fun environment. Most of their money is at Friday Night Magic, and the limited environment. That is their main focus when designing a set.

Anyone feel role reversal? at first we had monsters that couldn't be blocked by humans Stromkirk Noble now the most can't stop the humans...

I hate opening a pack and seeing this card. And I play zombies -_-

Why do they give a naturally defensive creature an ability that keeps it from blocking a large number of the only creatures it could actually survive blocking?

This card has one edge over other zombies for the one-drop slot - it can block the turn it comes out, assuming it isn't going against a human. Diregraf Ghoul comes into play tapped, and Gravecrawler can't block, period. I'm also going to point out that Hunted Ghoul is a COMMON, so comparing it to an uncommon and a rare isn't really fair, to be honest.
As much as I like to play devil's advocate though, I can't deny the fact that Diregraf Ghoul and Gravecrawler are still much better to include in a zombie deck than this guy. Hunted Ghoul is one of the unfortunate victims of the bad card policy - cards designed to be inferior to other cards, so that the other cards look better by comparison. Hunted Ghoul is entirely playable, but there are better choices and unfortunately, he will not see play because of that.
So this little bugger is capable of stopping an infinite cosmic monstrosity that devours planes of existance, but when our dear sweet Little Girl walks up he's all "Oh shit!"
And this is why I hate protection from tribal and it's ilk. It's all really really stupid.

this guy is really useful against veteran players who never updated their cards. Unless it is specifically written human it can defend against a soldier with no human context. For instance intrepid hero 2013 was human but intrepid hero before was just soldier. Prior to 2013 intrepid hero was not a human. So you can block him. Cause you play the cards as they were written I love how magic makes money in that way.

Anyone else relize it is missing the "when this card comes out to the field, place (token) on your opponents battlefield"? I think it woulda been a hell of a lot cooler to have a 2/2 Zombie that spawns 2 humans on your opponents side of the field with either protection from zombies or can't be blocked by zombies :p
you know, just so they don't ruin the Hunted series.

It's either a 1-power attacker or a weak blocker (compare to something like Pride Guardian or Young Wolf)...that also can't block most of the cards in this set. It's sad that they're so obsessed with pushing the whole "Humans win! Screw fans of previous tribals!" theme that they tack a drawback onto a creature that would've been bad without it anyway.

@wowsers
I feel like saying WOWSERS myself when I see a comment so terribly bad. Thats not how it works. All creatures have been changed now. type in any creature that was just a SOLDIER before. You'll see they are now humans or whatever other race they may be.
Seeing as they changed that for all creatures more then several years ago, its kind of appaling to see that misunderstanding as recent as July of 2012.

Even though I only play casual, after playing against this card, I really don't think that it's that good. The problem with this card is that it mostly just swings for 1. Have you ever done a Gatherer search on how many humans there are in this game? Right now, there are 1560 humans, not including changelings. In comparison, there are 1499 artifacts in the game right now. So yeah. It's neither a very good attacker (in comparison to stuff like Carnophage and Diregraf Ghoul) nor a good blocker (in comparison to Typhoid Rats). If you want a decent defensive black one-drop in casual, either use the rats or simply screw one-drops and put in some more removal. From my experience, one-drops which don't have a significant effect on the game for their cost are bad, even in casual (by a significant effect on the game, I mean on the level of the three cards I mentioned above).

Somehow I feel this is a similar argument to the Baneslayer Angel > Serra Angel scenario.
