Casual players on a limited budget searching for an affordable Wrath of God go here. And if the game lasts long enough the instant option is really strong.

Am I correct in saying that this is the only instant-speed WoG spell in Magic?

Love this card. Adding one extra mana = -$8.00.

Part of Breaking Wave's cycle of 'Non-Kicker Kicker' cards (the ability looks like Kicker..., but isn't, for a very good reason).

I still prefer Wrath of God.

@MrPink343: There's at least one more way to have WoG at instant speed, and that is using Mageta the Lion, although you would be trading the surprise factor for replayability.

actually there are others, all with slight variations on the actual effect. Retaliate which has a similar effect, its more of a personal thing, but still good.

Puppet's Verdict can be useful, but chancy

Tsabo's Decree would be very effective against tribal.

In EDH: Rout > Wrath of God

It's a card that is perhaps a bit slow in a duel, but Rout really shines in multiplayer. Getting up to 7 mana is certainly quite doable, and having instant-speed Wrath at your fingertips is comforting, for sure.

Flavourwise, WotC went in an interesting direction with the art on this card. We're seeing a castle burning in the background while Phyrexian flyers are chasing down fleeing refugees. In the context of the Invasion block, this makes sense - the initial invasion force absolutely smashed Benalia and other Dominarian nations. What that does mean, though, is that we're seeing a Phyrexian victory being depicted on a white card!

I do wonder, if they reprinted Rout in Scars block (now that the Phyrexians are back), whether they wouldn't rather show a rout in favour of a white-aligned faction in the art!

They cast this? Cast Twilight's Call, also from the cycle. Made for eachother <3

Wow. This is actually better than WoG.

Powercreep? Nah, just give WotC more money.

There are lock down cards that prevent spells from playing at sorcery speed, such as Opposition (taping your lands). Rout can be casted at instant speed which allows one to bypass that situation. Casting Wrath at your opponent's turn also free you up the mana for your next. You could also cast Rout in response to other instant spells, which allow more strategic options.

If nothing else, Rout is only one mana more expensive than Wrath of God, which can easily be a second board sweeper in your EDH deck without raising the bar too much.

Although Wrath is better, there's no reason to NOT run this if you're playing EDH anyway.

It's not like you're going to just play 1 board wipe.

In fact, you can construct a deadly RedWhiteBlack deck that has 30+ wipes. Maybe Kaalia would be a good general for that...

It may cost quite a bit to use, but instant speed wrath is very powerful, and shouldn't be underestimated.
It's scarce for a reason.

I think this would be a great keyword mechanic. Call it accelerate or something. Example time!

Rout
3WhiteWhite
Sorcery
Accelerate 2 (You may cast Rout at any time you could cast an instant by paying an additional 2.)
Destroy all creatures. They can't be regenerated.
