It's only now, looking at the latest "The Week That Was" column, that I get to see all the Magic 2012 Mages together in one place. Having the various creeds for their flavor text is just cool, it's like the mages are a set of Lantern Corps, and the creeds are their oaths.
Allowed me to stabilize quite a few games at the prerelease; the two power is just gravy. I really can't see any constructed value in this though. Probably the worst mage.

I would think any deck that includes but is not based on, lifegain, should see 4 of this guy in place of the other lifegain cards. He's decent & can be used early to late.

If you are running low on life and you opponent is dominating then it would be a great time to play this card. It could make one of your creatures have lifelink and also it is a 2/1 so it could fit in some damage there too. For its price its a great card. I recommend it.

Good power, a useful ability, all in all a pretty sound card. Not my favourite (Azure Mage and Jade Mage can both grant serious CA), but definitely playable. Would have been nicer if the ability cost instead, but...

I found it powerful in limited, making every combat more of a loss than a gain in damage for my opponent as my blockers kept gaining me more life that they were able to deal me in damage. Held off my opponent's flurry of early attacks until I could drop my threats and win.
