I'd rather have seen salamanders added to R and given fire abilities (more along the lines of myth).

What is the point of this?

If they're going to go the goofy sea creature route yet again for blue, I would have preferred that they bring back homarids. Lobsters have been repeatedly demonstrated in market research to capture the imagination more effectively than salamanders.

I think this new blue tribe is awesome, and if they make a tribal set of amphin cards in innistraud I'm going to build a deck around them. You know, somehow it reminds me of that fishy aquatic tentacle creature in hellboy the movie 1 that can keep reincarnating itself. That only makes it more awesome though!

Doug Beyer said about this in an article: We'll see how these salamander-folk fare as Magic rolls on. Innistrad? Also, the art looks similar to stuff from Shadowmoor...

Pretty overblown flavour text for such a crappy and generic creature.

Blue already had a perfectly good wacky non-Merfolk tribal in Homarids. Salamanders are pretty non-threatening in my experience. Except the poisonous ones, and even those are only poisonous if you eat them. A lobster on the other hand can pinch your toes off. Still, variety is good, I suppose.

For all those times when Azure Drake is just too powerful.

Has an almost Fallen Empires feel to it:
1) Strange, previously unsupported creature type (Salamander vs. Homarid)
2) Long flavor text that might be amusing
3) Useless creature.
This was supposed to be a way of testing the waters of a new creature type. You'd think they'd make the 'Salamander' posterboy a bit better if that's what they wanted to achieve.

If Giant Spider is good enough for Green then this is good enough for Blue.

I really like salamanders in the scheme of the four classical elementals (sylph, undine, cobalt/gnome, and salamander), so this is even more depressing than just being another pointless "limited fodder" card.
All but one of the other salamanders in the game are red, and have interesting burn/firebreathing abilities. This is a shame to the rest of its tribe.

Creepy salamanderfolk that worship faceless horrors of the depths are a really neat idea. Shame about the card itself.

So, Innistrad's come and amphins still haven't shown up. There's still hope they do later in the block, though.
After all, Innistrad is a gothic horror themed set, and this thing's quite Lovecraftian.

The sad thing is, even if they do make Salamander tribal, this card'll probably be more powerful in the old Lorwyn cycle-based Rogue tribal than anything else they can cook up.

@Salient
Whoa there! A blue creature that can be sacrificed to destroy a creature? Whoa! I'm not even sure if that would fit with the flavor!

Should have assassin creature type over rogue, but regardless, as a non-vanilla, this should be more akin to Nekrataal than having to sac itself. When this creature enters the battlefield, destroy target bonbons, nonartifact creature. It can't be regenerated.

Never underestimate vanillas. They serve as much needed meatshields, are the perfect targets for sacrificing, are a good way to encourage your opponent to blow their defensive spells on so a super creature can enter unhindered, and can become effective attackers out of no where with any number of buffs. A toughness of 4 is nice for defense, seeing as not many creatures attack with strong enough power.
nevertheless, i can only give it a 2/5, because one simply expects more from a 'cuthroat' of any kind, and the flavor text falsely hinted at the rise of the salamanders (which is particularly disappointing because salamanders are awesome!)

Awesome!
Might be for the block after Innistrad, just to tease some more. Who knows?

I see no reason there can't be more vicious lobster men - they could even be good this time!
Stupid ol'Salamander.

Sacrifice Amphin Cutthroat: destroy target creature with converted mana cost 4 or less.
