I like how the flavor text deals with metalcraft by listing three artifacts.

5/7 is pretty good for turn 5, especially without targetting restrictions.

Decent serpent for the block, I guess...

I love the flavor of this card! Not only does it have metalcraft... but it's flavor text fits with it having a metalcraft ability by saying which three artifacts make it lose defender.

this guy is a beast in draft, i want to make it fly just so i can attack with a flying serpent who was a defender.

Nope. Serpent of the Endless Sea is better. I only need one card-Convincing Mirage-to let it attack, compared to three, and roughly 20% of the time I don't even need that. This one might start off bigger, but the SES will only get larger.
NoobOfLore, you better replace Dark Maze. That card is sh!t. I have a friend with a decent pinger deck that would be good if he'd take those out. Hell, I give him cards that are clearly better, but the stubborn bastard is attached to those walls. It's a Homelands card that isn't Serrated Arrows, no one should ever use it.

Not to state the overly obvious, but I LOVE this guy with Vent Sentinel (and the other RotE defenders). Sentinel doesn't care that the Serpent is only masquerading as a defender once you roll out enough artifacts. And with even red now getting some artifact love, I can see those two making sweet dual-win-condition music together.

Youve got to be insane to not see the brilliance in this card.
For metalcraft, this is extremely good. Plop a few memnites and what not and your set with a 5/7 for 5. Not only that, but it STILL has defender when its attcking, so if youre flying with defender decks, this is a must have.
Even by itself its a 3/5 defender. For blue, thats pretty good.

Can really be a beast in limited. Not a first pick, but definitely up there if you're running blue.

Erik's Random card 6/19/2011
When design handed the card file over, this was a 3U Aura with: Enchant artifact As long as enchanted artifact isn't a creature, it's a 5/5 creature that's still an artifact.
I, and some of my development team, found that confusing. As long as it isn't a creature, it is a creature. What? I liked the feel of the ability, but wasn't thrilled by the card. The original Tezzeret could make all your artifacts into 5/5 creatures. It made sense to me that the new Tezzeret still used that ability, but only on one artifact.
Now we had a hole in our file. Blue gets the same number of commons, and something has to replace the missing aura. We tried a card that looked at the top five cards of your library for an artifact. The problem was that Ancient Stirrings was still in our FFL-Standard. This was too similar (and worse).
Blue was too weak. I thought a big flier would be fun. However, this gave the set too many big fliers, so I gave up on that. Then I put in a defender with metalcraft. Metalcraft has a bit of a +2/+2 theme at common. However this wasn't very fun. Mons suggested letting the wall attack; it was a great suggestion, and it became more fun. The initial defender helps "hold the fort" while you accumulate artifacts. We tried different versions of the stats, and this seemed the most fun.

This is actually quite good for a common.
Seriously, if you play blue, you'll probably have at least 3 artifacts to help establish control. this can help establish control against green. just make sure you get the 3 artifacts out first.

I'm sorry... Is that a 5/7 for 5 in blue? I think it is. aha. Use silverskin armor on this guy, you're 2/3 of the way there already, now just grab a Bladed Pinions or a Flayer Husk or something, and you're set.

Good design. This guy was pretty brutal in sealed. As Mr Lauer put it, he'd hold down the fort while you waited to draw into your artifacts and bombs. 3/5

A 5/7 for 5 in artifact decks. I have been tempted, I'll admit.

Obviously not constructed material, but I remember this guy being much better than people initially realized in Scars limited.
