But "nonbasic lands"? Who uses those?! Certainly not any high-tier tournament decks, no sir.

Pretty much a 2/3 for G in today's standard and in old format where dual lands are so popular.

Kird Ape and Loam Lion with a twist
I have yet to see a constructed deck (standard or casual) to not use 1 non basic land

Braid_of_Fire's Card of the Day #6

As much as I love gorillas, this is my favorite Kird Ape variant even though, like the punisher mechanic, it gives the choice to your opponent.

If you draw (as opposed to play), Game 1 this creature will generally start as a 2/3 on turn one, the equivalent of shocking yourself or grabbing a very expensive Taiga with a Kird Ape (or a Loam Lion, sure). How good is this? According to winning Zoo lists over the last five or ten years, not good enough. Perhaps I am unwise to include this but not Kird Ape in my 450 cube if that's how tournament players feel, but the satisfaction of a 2/3 on turn one in mono green, ready to block your opponent's Goblin Guide or Jackal Pup is an experience I like to have.

This card is very anti-civilization, a stance that shows green's separation from white and provides flavor-logic for the card's effect. "They have defiled nature! Our fighting spirit has increased to rid nature of this artificial, unnatural force!" is what this card is saying to me. That's a pretty strong message for green, and a good one to share in a booster pack with a new player.

The only problem with this is with these same newer players, losing to this card enough times (because newer players usually only have a deck or two) will incentivize them to use less or no non-basics, which will cause them more problems than they gain by giving this card +1/+2. Newer players won't be as quick to realize that the reason they're having difficulty casting spells is because of their weaker mana base and they will think they are "correct" to make this sacrifice for the benefit of keeping the Elite down. It's likely the reason it hasn't been reprinted and won't be.

I only wish this were common for my 12-land pauper stompy.
