He's actually after all these years still playable in zombie decks. 2/3 for 3 is ok, swampwalk is nice, and the regeneration ability (even though it doesn't work for himself) is cheap as well. Not to mention that he is a zombie by now as well, and thus gets buffed by other zombie-buffing cards.

@majinara: Don't forget that the Zombie Master isn't a Legend, meaning you can have two in play at the same time. Not only do you get the safety of redundancy, but your Masters can now regenerate.

A 2/3 body Lord creature with 2 tribal abilities for 3 was very good in Alpha's time as far as black is concerned. With today's available Zombies, Zombie Master is beast, and a staple in most Zombie decks. I guess he was the standard used to design subsequent Zombie lords such as Lord of the Undead and Death Baron.

I remember when I first started playing magic. I wanted to play a Zombie deck. I found the gatherer and set the search for zombies only. Well after sifting all the zombie cards in the game. There were to many to affectivly make a deck. So I started to cut cards and after 10 or 12 protodecks this guy made the cut in every single one. He is now one of my go to zombie cards, the other is Death Baron

This and Death Baron are a wicked combo. When playing against other zombies which didn't have a Zombie Master down, I waited, built up my forces, played this kinda like a sorcery and zerged my opponent for ~28 swampwalk for the win. Easily a staple for zombie decks.

Don't forget to add a few Evil Presence or at least sideboard a few.

The card text says "zombie creatures gain swampwalk and zombie creatures gain regenerate". That in mind does that mean zombies my opponents control gain those abilities as well? It doesn't specifically state 'Zombie creatures you control' like Death Baron and Cemetery Reaper do.

Yeah, I'm afraid so. It's similar to how Slivers have universal buffs. Hopefully, you shouldn't be up against other zombies too much, or that could be a bit of an issue.

So is he a zombie? My card doesn't say so, but if the newer releases have him listed as one, should he be considered one? Similarly for Lord of the Undead. Also, LotU has a new ruling; does that exempt him from non-zombie status? This severely limits my call to the grave usage.

For years I thought this guy was wearing glasses. Now I realize he's just very tired.
