i love everything about this card. the artwork is some crazy HP lovecraft stuff and the card mechanic itself is totally amazing to build a deck around. i've been playing with 3 in a deck for at least a year with my friends and i never get tired of saying it - "i'll cast nether void." the response is always something along the lines of "*** you." works really well with modern cards, too.

Actually it doesn't work quite like that. You seen Guile gives you the option to cast it again. Which means it will just be countered unless you pay 3. So in the end you are still paying an extra 3 to play your own spells.

@Yozuk and drpvfx:

Okay guys, according to Rule 614.6, Guile's ability causes a modified event (exiling the spell and playing/casting it) to occur instead of the original countering of the spell by Nether Void, and this event may in turn trigger abilities. So, if Guile's ability allows you to "cast" the card, then this can cause an infinite casting loop (which could be used to build up an arbitrarily large storm count).

However, according to Rule 701.10d, cards that refer to casting cards as "playing" them have all been updated in Oracle to refer to "casting" that card. If this is true, and since Guile's ability apparently still reads "you may play that card," then I'd doubt that the card is actually being cast; rather, it seems like it is being put directly onto the stack, as a copy of a spell with Replicate or Storm might be, I suppose. Except, according to Rule 701.10b, "to play a card means to play that card as a land or to cast that card as a spell, whichever is appropriate." So it must mean "you may cast that card," right? The Oracle rulings all use the "cast" terminology, so maybe the Oracle text for the actual card just somehow escaped being updated.

My guess is that the word "play" was just overlooked, and it really should read "cast" like Isochron Scepter. But, in the end, it's a totally valid question that probably needs answering by somebody more well-qualified than I am.

Okay, everyone- I got a ruling from three different judges, and they all said the same thing:
If I have Guile and Nether Void in play, then I cast a spell and let Nether Void counter it,
it will still require 3 to resolve when it comes out of Guile.
Not paying that 3 will cause the spell to fail again, and Guile can cast it again.
This can be repeated to build up a Storm count as high as you wish,
and then you can kill an entire table of creatures and players with a single Grapeshot.

Not quite as fun as what I had in mind,
but I still think I'm going to be using this combo... I just need to add some Storm cards to the deck.

@DRPVFX: Thanks! That's a beautiful chain of thought. Grapeshot is good, I think mixing in Volcanic Awakening is gonna be my way to go...

Remind me to build some nasty tribal deck with this and Cavern of Souls.

So it Mana Leaks EVERYTHING. Seems fair, fun, and great for casual, especially if you like making lots of creatures and attacking. Wait. No. Actually none of what I just said is true. ^_^ But what IS true is-- "If you Liked Tomb of Horrors, you'll LOVE this!" Oh, Wizards- when will you realize that the things you did back when you had guts were your Glory Days? You and Disney both :P

Uh,
This is legal in vintage at 4.
While trinisphere can only be played at 1.
This actually makes a bigger difference than trinisphere for anything that isn't a mox/lotus.
And it allows your own combos to be a thing.
All of this for {B} more than the sphere.
How is this not played in stax, and how is this not broken in legacy.

It has long been said that the goal of a permission deck is to turn Counterspell into a permanent.

Well, this is Mana Leak: The Permanent.

@Yawg_Moth I suspect the main reason this card isn't played more in Legacy is that they're really hard to find and on the reserved list. I wouldn't mind seeing a judge promo or something, but that'll only happen if it gains popularity.

@Ragamander Actually, the entire reason Guile still reads "play" instead of "Cast" is for one card, the land Zoetic Cavern. If cast for it's morph cost and countered by Guile, it will be exiled as a land, of which can then only be played, not cast.

What an awesome card.
Whenever a card does something it's color usually can't, it makes the card that much better. Even though everyone knows about this card, I still find that people arent really expecting to see counterspells in Black. This card in Blue wouldnt be nearly as amazing. Just like Psionic Blast wouldnt be a very interesting card at all if it were Red.
I play a Black and Blue deck. In a perfect world, my draw has a Dark Ritual and some artifact mana, turn one I play a Juzam Djinn, turn 2 a Nether Void. Even a Swords To Plowshares or an Unsummon needs 4 mana to cast at that point.
