Another Arabian-themed set would be very very cool. More djinn please!

Aww, not a Marid anymore? 'Marid' could have been a creature type to put Nymphs and similar creatures into. We want to see Nymphs in Magic!

this reminded me a lot of the Jockey in Left 4 Dead 2.

@A3Kitsune: there used to be a nymph in Magic: Shanodin Dryads. Unfortunately, since dryads are now a type and pretty much else is going to be an elemental, I don't think there'll ever be any more nymphs.

Wow he's pretty good. Besides the obvious mind control his stats are pretty good. A 2/3 for three mana is pretty good in blue, especially back in the day.

Erik's Random card 6/23/2011

I was playing when Arabian Nights was released. I liked Control Magic, but it was a bit too good (and annoying) so people complained, and I switched to Royal Assassin and Prodigal Sorcerer (Tim). I loved Old Man because it still took stuff, but wasn't quite as good at it, and was easier to deal with. People didn't complain :)

When I was designing Masters Edition III, initially I had In the Eye of Chaos instead of Old Man of the Sea. ME 3 is primarily composed of cards from Legends, The Dark, and Portal Three Kingdoms. In the Eye of Chaos is in Legends. Old Man is in Arabian Nights, so by set it would be in Master's Edition IV.

I decided to sketch out ME 4, and see what it looked like. I noticed both Control Magic and Old Man of the Sea were in that set. They are very powerful limited cards with very similar effects, and I thought it would be more fun to only have one in each set. I picked Old Man to go in ME 3; ME4 was going to have Beta, and thus look more like a loaded core set. Control Magic is the clean card I would expect in a core set.

I also wrote a note to remind Tom when development started about In the Eye of Chaos. I explained the situation to him. He could go with any of In the Eye of Chaos, Old Man of the Sea, and Control Magic. He said leaving both for ME 4 was just wrong, and that Control Magic belongs in ME 4. So Old Man stayed in this set.

Sometimes we spend a lot of time trying to iron out little details that no one notices. Often that is all we are hoping for!

@A3Kitsune: Marid = nymph? 'Marid' originates in the Arabic for rebel; he has been changed to djinn probably because he is occasionally described as such.

Now I'm going to be afraid to go to the beach because some old man is going to pop out and try to rape me

Can someone explain what would happen if I copy this ability with Experimental Kraj, then use the Kraj to steal someones creature? Will it care if the Kraj untaps, or the original Old Man?

@Milun: It would care about the Kraj.

Actually combos rather nicely with Leaden Fists.

He was an old man who fished in the Gulf Stream and he had not caught a fish in 84 days... And he could steal your small creatures by tapping.

Anyway, pretty good card. Can steal pretty nice stuff like vampire nighthawk, guttersnipe or tajic, blade of the legion. It only costs 1UU which is cheap and is rather powerful considering some of the other cheap blue creatures.

5/5, good creature.

I really think that Wizards should give this a Marid creature type. A marid is not the same thing as a djinn or an efreet.
