What a flavour text. Rivals the "Right to bear arms" travesty.

Groan-indcuing flavor text aside, I was surprised to find out this wasn't a Kamigawa card, that guy's armor does look fairly Samurai-esque.
I'm working on a deck with this guy in it. It's white-black. All the white cards try to gain me obscene amounts of life. All the black cards use life as a resource.
Instant speed, cardless pumping is always good.

Why don't you like the flavor text? I love it and so I do with Werebear's. :-)

Stupid card that shouldn't have wasted a slot in the demon deck of Divine vs Demonic.

hmm, in a vamp life link deck this might work fine.
@HairlessThoctar: I totally thought this was from Kamigawa too, considering the art and the Spirit creature type.

For maybe. But like this the cost seems to high if you could just get 4/4s or even bigger creature for 4cc when paying more than one black mana instead of paying 6 life. (Over the top example for : Phyrexian Obliterator)
It might have some use when combined with other card like Tainted Sigil, though. But there are better things to spend your life on. (Hurr hurr.)

Love the joke, hate the art. Not that it's poorly done, or anything. It just scares me.
Clearly, they were trying to be careful. They didn't want people to use something like Fatal Frenzy to power up the creature too quickly and go for the one shot kill. Making the costs of the card cheaper probably would have broken it.
Makes me wonder if there is combination of costs that could have made this card anything other than terrible or broken.

Someone tell me if I'm wrong, but if you had an Elderscale Wurm out, could you just keep draining your life down to 1, then letting its "return to 7 life" triggered ability resolve, then draining down to 1 again and repeating the process, adding 3 +1/+1 counters to Souldrinker over and over until you went infinite?
The only reason I could think of this not working would be because the Wurm's rules texts says "damage that reduces your life total to less than 7." Since you're paying life for Souldrinker's ability, I wonder if that makes a difference.

Its really to far under the curve for this ability to be any good. Outside of combo this thing is pretty trashy. Example of something you could use today, Moltensteel Dragon. You can pay same mana cost and only 4 life to get a 4/4 flying. This guy demands 6 life to get to 4/4 status and he is stuck on the ground.
3/3 for 4 with this ability would be acceptable. Then you can think about paying 3 life for a 4/4 for 4, kind of under the curve by today's standards. Anything higher is a big life investment but could pay off.

Yeah life loss is not damage. You would need another card with that combo, perhaps Pestilence? It is not infinite but it is stylish.
