So much better in Rise than Masques.
Hastey annihilator dudes for the win!

It's like...all your creatures (except Shroud or protection from red of course) now have haste with just a tap of a creature :3

Might be better off with a Bloodthorn Taunter if it's just for Eldrazi.

Yeah, I'd rather {T} Bloodthorn Taunter myself. In more ways than one.

hm, I'd rather Sootstoke Kindler on turn 2 and give my turn three AND turn four drops haste.

Fantastic card for a reprint, although I really wish this guy had haste himself, flavour-wise it would be hilarious, and also it would then be a wall with haste...which is all sorts of silly. Fits {R} like a glove.

Braid_of_Fire's Card of the Day #7

To a red mage whose mind courses with red thoughts and red feelings, this is a Null Rod.

Red walls are an interesting thing overall. Early Magic has them destroying walls left and right whether it's with a Dwarven Demolition Team, Word of Blasting or a Tunnel. And that makes sense! Walls don't do anything. They don't kill your opponent. They don't blow up anything that's in your way. They aren't any sort of expression of emotion, passion, or chaos. They sit there and prevent your opponent from attacking you. Who cares if your opponent is attacking you if you're a red mage? You're better than they are! They'll be dead before you're bloodied and you can take some pain. At least with pain you're feeling something!

Sure, it gives your soldiers haste. Red does that. But when you do that, this card isn't even acting as a wall! If this cost less than three, this wouldn't be so terrible, but this is a low toughness wall that can only start giving haste turn 4 and cannot do its only other function when its providing the marginal effect of haste.

I understand that Rise had a defender sub-theme. I understand that for the sake of cycles and themes that Wizards is willing to bend the color pie. At least Vent Sentinel kills things though! And it has a flavorful reason for existing in red. This Battle Rampart can't even send new reinforcements into battle the same turn it defends you, its commander!

Red just should not have walls if WotC can help it. A red mage simply would not want to cast one.

@Palochka: Obviously you haven't seen Wall of Fire, Vent Sentinel, or Aether Membrane. Walls are perfectly in the Red mages style if used correctly. Red doesn't JUST mean mindless destruction and a blatant disregard for its own safety. It can play that way but that isn't a requirement, just like how White doesn't REQUIRE things like Healing Salve, Blue doesn't REQUIRE Cancel, etc. To the Red mage who enjoys lobbing fire down upon his foes from his mage's tower, Red walls are the way to go. They offer a major advantage to the Red mage who actually has a brain in his head, which is I suppose why you can't appreciate it.

As for the card itself, a bit underwhelming at 2Red, would've been fine at 1Red, but what can you do? Name was taken and whatnot. Love the concept and flavor, though. A small outpost that can be collapsed to get your troops on the move.

Finally a red wall that makes sense. If you look at the history of red walls, the only other one that makes sense was the Pitchstone Wall from Torment and Vent Sentinel. Because the only reason, to provide a counterpoint to Braid_of_Fire's rant, that a red mage does want a wall, is because they are spellslingers in need of protection until they either cast a dragon or become a dragon (Form of the Dragon). A red mage would want walls is to make his spells more effecient, until they can reach dragon-level. This wall allows you to have a finisher without haste, and

High toughness and decent power allows you to save burn for utility characters & evasive creatures... this is why cards like Wall of Torches, or wall of stone don't make sense - they simply block either only once, like a bad burn spell, or do no damage, which just delays the inevitable. It is not for a sligh or RDW style deck, which is focused on turning dudes sideways. This is for the mages looking for a tower.
