I can't believe someone asked "why?".... Why? Because it's a good card... It's almost like people WANT WOTC to make crappy cards just because they might be balanced it they SUCK... Jeez shut up and enjoy the COMMON Boon that does three for 1 is back.

★★★☆☆ (3.8/5.0) (7 votes)
I'm not going to lie it's a little broken, but it's not too bad. Also to Slack, If they brought back every good card then ridiculously overpowered cards such as Time Walk and Mana Drain would be back, and the game would be ruined. People who think every good and overpowered card should be brought back are morons.

If you don't rate this a 5 out of 5 you have no brain and should quit Magic. I don't think it should have been reprinted, but there are nonetheless 4 in my R/G deck.

Just when I decide to start playing Magic again, *YOU* of all cards return. The bane of my days as a newbie, the horror of my time as a starter, and the single most annoying card I can think right off the bat (well good'ol lightning ball also returned... ***). However I find this irony refreshing, we'll see how both of us adapt to the new rules.

Enough with my whining, back with a worthwhile comment: Lightning is an excellent card for aggro themed deck. Will give a quick advantage against pretty much all decks without creatures that have only (1) mana summoning cost, plus using a counter spell might not be the best idea (might want to save it for an emergency). I also love the flavor text; it is deliciously ironic and incredibly adequate. This card definitely deserves a 4/5 for being an excellent game opener and for sheer nostalgia overflow.

All I'm gonna say here is that the Lightning Bolt has got to be the MOST Uncommon, Common card in existance. After close to 30 booster packs and NOT one of them had a lightning bolt in them.

after having all the cards that deal two damage and some other effect, it's good to see the cla^ssic burn spell back. with all of the burn we've been getting use to, this is just another hurdle to get over, and I expect to see lots of lightning bolt/ball lightning decks again.

Flavor text is the best ^.^

Slightly broken, but then again, all the colors seem to be getting a boost so whatever.

Lightning, btw, does strike twice.

With creatures as they are now I don't feel this is at all broken and I don't even run it some red decks and then maybe only 2. Terminate, pyroclasm or path to exile are arguably better. They may end up leaving it in.

Three damage for one tiny mana at instant speed, can you ask for more? I think not.

Remarkably this card has currently a 5/5 rating in every edition except for Masters Edition and here in M10.

On the other hand i wonder how you can not give this card 5 out of 5 stars! I mean, it's likely the best burn spell ever printed.
You should rate a card by usability, not determine your rating by whether you like the card or not...at least that's how i rate cards.

This is a little odd. Back in 1994 - 1995, we didn't consider this card "broken". Sure, it is an awesome card, but then again this card WAS the color red, just like "Dark Ritual" WAS the color black. This may sound obscene, but I don't think "Lightning Bolt" should have gone out of print for such a long time. Magic lost alot of it's appeal for me (and many of my friends) when "Lightning Bolt" turned into "Shock", "Hill Giant" became "Superinsectwarrior of Ghribnokthamwab" and "Roc of Kher Ridges" got axed or turned into another generic unpronouncable card. Call us strange, but we considered red the color of mountains, earth, fire and chaos. This means giants, elementals, fireballs, lightning bolts, ogres, orcs, goblins, rocs and even raging rivers.
I'm glad MTG tries to return to form a little and bring each color's specific flavor back. Lightning Bolt should never have gone out of print, just like blue needs the basic "Counterspell" back.
5 colors, each unique and it's on own flavor, good to see they are trying to bring that back.

Arguably one of the top five best cards in Type2 right now. I don't think it's as broken as it would be if Flame Jav and some other powerful burn cards were still Type2.

Anything less than 5/5 would be a crime. It's just so darn versatile...
BDragon123
★★★☆☆ (3.0/5.0) (2 votes)
It's a fantastic burn card. As far as the best, that depends on the deck. I would argue that Lightning Axe is better for the particular deck that I'm building, that being a hellbent/madness themed deck. In that case, Lightning Axe is absolutely FANTASTIC: 5 damage AND I get to discard a card for 1 mana. FAR better than Lightning Bolt. But in most other situations, yeah, I'd agree that Lightning Bolt is significantly better.

Originally Richard Garfield had designed a cycle of cards based on a one for three ratio (Known as 'boon' cycle).

Blue Ancestral Recall (draw 3 cards)
Quickly recognized as broken, it did not see reprint after the 2nd (Unlimited) edition. One should note that Richard was apparantly aware of Ancestral's unbalanced nature, as this is the only rare card in the cycle.

Red Lightning Bolt (deal 3 damage)
Red's card saw reprint up to 4th edition but was downgraded to shock with 6th edition in an effort to balance the game.

Black Dark Ritual (produce 3 black mana)
Dark Ritual's mana speed demon made it to 5th edition before being deemed unbalanced.

White Healing Salve (gain or prevent 3 damage)
White made it to 8th edition but was so under played it was removed due to lack of interest.

Green Giant Growth (+3/+3)
Giant Growth may be the most printed non-land card in magic, it has seen print (as a common) in every edition.

Okay plain and simple, objective, deal as much damage to your opponent, as quickly as possible. Though by itself not enough, in the right deck, it beats everything accept 0 , 1, 2, 3, 4 and some 5 turn combo kill decks!

I'm sorry, but this card is NOT common. Out of 40 booster packs, I've gotten exactly ONE of these. I have 5...6...7, even 8 copies of pieces of crap like grave digger, zombie goliath, giant spider, deadly recluse, berserkers of blood ridge, runeclaw bear...I have 3 Serra Angels, 2 pithing needles... and exactly ONE lightning bolt. "You have to help us!" Wizards says, barging in to the tiny office. "Creatures have taken over the game! Elf decks, Jund decks, Fae, Zoo- hyper-efficient creatures and underpriced bombs! You have to stop them! They've killed draw-go, and turned the game into a four-turn clock."
Lightning Bolt leans back a little. Casually, he puts his feet up on his desk. "Well, boy, I can't slow down your game for you. I don't ask questions- players, creatures, it's all the same. But I can make hyper-efficient mid-range creatures look like Grey Ogres. You've seen my work with that guy, right? Brilliant. But you do know that I haven't worked for you in years?"
Wizards lowers it's gaze. "We....we know. But we're desperate. We thought it might not look like an arms race between removal and creatures if we called in past contracts."
Bolt smirks. "Hey. I'm just glad to be back in the game." Slowly, he dons a pair of sunglasses. "Hey, Terminate? Get geared up. We've got work to do."

I don't like this very much. It may be a good burn spell (if not the best) but with this reprint all the other burn spells like Firebolt, Rift Bolt or Shock are totally weak in comparision.

★★★☆☆ (3.0/5.0) (1 vote)
Best post ever, Doc Kenneth.

This card is the undeniable proof that creature power-ramping has gotten out of hand. Red finally gets the boost that it deserved, since every color has gotten better at dealing with red, except red (although bolt helps aggro and counter-aggro, go red/blue!).

Shock simply wouldn't have made it in M10, nor would Volcanic Hammer.

Got 2 so far in my red deck, definitely gonna get 2 more. Incredible that teh best burn spell ever (3 dmg to creature or player for 1 mana instant speed) is common! How can you rate this other than 5/5? If it's because of colour hate, just make a red deck too so you can also enjoy this, that's what I did ;)
They should have kept it at this 1mana for 3dmg, flame slash was a mistake imo.
