I'm happy to see it back in the Core Set as well
Although keep in mind that the art isn't really new, as it was already available in the special Demonic vs Devine Set.

With extirpate Duress can disarm your opponent's counters or combos pretty nicely.

Great discard for first turn... eliminate thos nasty spells ur opponent has... coupled with Blightning, MInd Rot and Megrim and ur opponent will surely suffer...

Duress is, and always has been, a great card. I love the new art that M10 / Divine vs. Demonic gave it, but can't help but feel sorry for that elf.

Some great black/red combos.

1. Duress to see what they've got
2. Thought Hemorrhage to brutally rip the best stuff out of their hand
3. Blightning on the next turn for further hand-rape
4. Savor the sweet card advantage
5. ???
6. Profit!

One of the best all-time cards for 1 black mana. It's becoming a staple in my decks.

Last draft I did, i managed to play this turn 1 three times, and made my opponent discard an Overrun, Harm's Way and an Indestructibility

For those who can't afford Thoughtseize, there's Duress!

I love the new art. It really captures the feeling of forceful compliance.

Nothing is better than to have someone play this on you when you're hand of 5 cards is nothing but creatures and land.

@Etregan: how about having them NOT play it on you?

Even if they don't get rid of anything they get to see your hand which is very handy. For example, a common matchup - Jund V Vampires. Game 1, Vampie player duresses the Jund player and sees that they have creatures and land, one of which is a Great Sable Stag. Vampire player now knows to hold back his Gatekeeper for the Stag and remove the other creatures with other spells. That's pretty handy information.

Whilst game 2 and 3 of this matchup the vamp players should already be aware that the Jund player would have Sable Stags, knowing it game 1 could set up the crucial first win.

Not bad, not bad, if used with other hand disruption cards, it could be a pain in the butt. you could even combo this with Jace. i don't see why they didn't just make it a rare, and have it be any card in their hand at all.

Great card. Very powerful Card for just one mana. Its advantages aren't just that they discard a card its also good intelligence gathering so you know what to expect and can play/react accordingly.

any kind of discard just makes me wet, but a turn one peek at their opening hand? hand me more lotion, i'm gonna be here a while.

This is one of the reasons why I love black. Black mages don't wait with ready mana for you to cast a spell so they can counter it, they rip into your mind, look at all your threats, removes the strongest none creature and now knows what to expect. This card is brilliant, so much for just 1 mana.

Very powerful in the black early game and definitely not to be underestimated.

Fits in any deck that has swamps.

You can't not love Duress. A very reasonable discard effect, especially for that price! The most disruptive cards are non-creature, non-land cards anyways.

Art's not very good, though.
