Two mana for a token-making early game blocker, capable of gaining you some life even if you draw it later? Pretty good, I think.

Would have been so much better had they made him a Thallid. Then he could be affected by Sporesower Thallid and thereby used in a Thallid deck. As he stands, not so good. Especially for being a rare.

Curiously, at the time of this posting people have given Mycologist a higher rating despite the fact that the farmer is green and more likely to fit into a Fungus deck.
Also of note, Richard Kane-Ferguson is my favorite artist.

I agree, he would be way better as a fungus (Thallid's creature type), but it fits Fallen Empire's flavor - he's feeding you saprolings. And while he doesn't get more counters with Sporesower Thallid, 2-of in a thallid deck would not be bad for its lower curve and ability to save you in the long run.

Transforming all your saprolings into mini kitchen finks since 1994.

Great flavor here, I love all the non-fungus cards that get spore counters.

Fun in casual games. He's quite the Swiss army knife! He can block, make creatures, and heal you.... all for 2 mana. What's not to like about that?

Slow and not very useful. Saprolings aren't going to win you any games, especially not one every three turns.
Would be decent in a Saproling heavy deck, but has that ever been a thing? You should pass on this goober.

Not quite, you can do a lot with cheap Saprolings. Take Time Spiral era Thallids.
In the meantime, you drop Thelon of Havenwood, making your one drop Thallids a lot more of an issue. You don't even need to drop the Saprolings, you can wait until the Thallid would die to do so.
Elvish Farmer is pretty terrible on his own, but his ability works decently if you have extra Saprolings to use. The chump-block-sac strategy is pretty effective.

You drop Utopia Mycon early, then ramp up into Sporesower Thallid. From there you drop (in a perfect world) Sporoloth Ancient.
