Any dragon with Blaze combined in it is phenomenal by almost any standard.

Very similar to Shivan Dragon, but way cooler. That blaze is much more effective at clearing out blockers than the firebreathing was. I'm kinda sad that the Shivan Dragon has been rendered obsolete, though.

the problem with flameblast dragon is where do you get the mana?

★★★☆☆ (3.5/5.0)(1 vote)
You get the mana when it untaps the turn after summoning it. Summon it, next turn attack with it and use its ability to kill blockers(even ones bigger than itself depnding on what you put into it) or deal the damage to him or her.

This card will fry your opponents up, provided it doesn't get countered or terminated. Throw a Mage Slayer on this and watch your opponent cry.

A dragon with Blaze, or Banefire possibly... i always include this wenever i make a burn deck... this is a solid dragon, it will deal 5 damage and the X damage to your opponent that will possibly end the game or burn a creature that really irritates you then deal the 5 damage to your opponent...

yeah, shivan dragon just got one-upped. 4RR for a 5/5 flying dragon. Where shivan dragon's firebreathing gets stopped by a chump block, or combat trick, destruction spell etc, flameblast can burn out an important blocker, or burn the player even if he gets blocked. very useful.

I use two of these in my speedy burn deck (red, black, green). It's basically my closer if I haven't burned or weenie swarmed my opponent to death first.

Dragons seem overpowered these days.. I have one of these in a naya type deck and I can't switch it out for anything else because it wins way to many games, you can either lock down your enemy by using the flame blasts on their creatures once a turn, or can simply spam it on their life points when they get low enough. Probably the best of the jund dragons followed by broodmother.

The very first fire-breathing dragon ! which makes him quite powerful. Not to mention the amazing artwork.

This and Hellkite Charger have pushed out Shivan Dragon out of its glory. One can Blaze and the other can do a waves of agression style effect.
BTW, can someone respond to your this card's Blaze effect by unsummoning it?

I was ecstatic to see that I had pulled it, but its even more fun than I had thought is was going to be. An amazing play, and combined with some Cloudposts mana and a few mountains, my opponent was dumbfounded to be burned to death is one shot by a blocked creature.

Flameblast dragon and quietus spike would be devastating, either instant kill target blocker, or ping your opponent for 1 damage and it still takes off half their life points. If that x cost is big it reduces their life points and applies the damage, probably ending the game right away. It's all risky vs. removal, but if it works its almost a definite win. What's really great about flameblast dragon also is that even played normally, it's a great sneak attack card, as you can be losing and be down to 5 life, attack once and drop a huge x cost flameblast to your opponents life points and a lightning bolt for the win. Red also pairs with green in a lot of decks and green produces a lot of mana to throw at that x cost. You have to love that it says target player or creature as well, because then you can choose to kill off a planeswalker.

@Elfie: Mana to play this dragon isn't a problem when you can manage to keep in play one or two Dragonspeaker Shaman. Just add Seething Song and it will get in play pretty soon.
Flameblast is my favorite dragon by far. Just great! 5/5

@ whoever asked where you get the mana to use blaze. I got 1 card, that costs no mana, and is INCREDIBLY powerful with this card: EVERFLOWING CHALICE, if you have a land fishing deck (I have an Ob Nixilis in my deck, so I promote Landfall), this card is destruction. 3 Jund Panoramas, 3 Explores, 3 Kalhni Heart Expoditions. Stack up all that Mana, you can have that dragon dealing good damage, use Everflowing Chalice (I have 2 in my deck) You can be dealing damage of 15+ on as early as turn 5 (if things are going your way). Its a rediculos combo, and even if you dont use Flameblast, Chalice is a solid card that can REALLY help summon fatties in any Alara deck.

Possibly one of the best one color dragons ever made, better than hellkite overlord in most cases, if you have enough mana it can kill... just about anything that isn't indestructible or has shroud.

My favorite dragon in magic along with good old Shivan Dragon. It kinda feels like an upgrade for the latter. I run two of both of them and this one in particular is a great card as he can deal damage to your opponent AND his creatures at the same time.

@thrallalmighty: To the contrary, Mordant Dragon is much worse. Flameblast smashes through blockers and gets to hit the opponent, and is more mana-efficient when they have no flyers and you just need to win now. In contrast, Mordant is worse than Shivan Dragon if they have even an Ornithopter out.
Probably my favorite dragon, excepting maybe the spectacular Steel Hellkite. Dragons with built-in two for ones make me happy, and Blaze on a stick is fantastic.

Quietus Spike only halves life totals off of combat damage.

For me, this is one of those creatures that played out more effectively than it seemed to me to be at first view. It's one of those creatures that is going to draw attention (destruction spells) quickly.
Hm. I give it a 4 of 5 (5 reflecting perfection in a Magic card, such as Black Lotus) as a card, though it feels more devastating than that after it has successfully attacked and blasted with its flame.
I like the way this dragon's fire-breathing mechanic works, compared to Shivan Dragon's original rendition. It seems to better represent a dragon in action. Shivan is still quite classic and playable, but Flameblast Dragon is simply much better in multi-colored decks, at the very least. I also like what they did with Ancient Hellkite.
