My friends and I have a disagreement about this card...does its effect stay there until it leaves play or is it just for the turn that it comes out on?

Her ability happens every turn even on your turn. But how does she effect cascade???????? I'm thinking the stack only allows one card too play but the controller gets to decied which spell gets off. Am I right????

ok First off the ability is there as long as she is.
second in cascade the spell you cascade into is the FIRST spell that gets played so unless you cascade into a artifact or your cascading with a sphinx this chick stops the cascading spell it's self from going off.

also oracle has to say

In other words: Each turn, each player can play any number of artifact spells plus a maximum of one nonartifact spell.
10/1/2008 This effect counts all nonartifact spells that are played, even those that are countered.
10/1/2008 This effect takes into account spells that were played earlier in the turn that Ethersworn Canonist came into play, including any spells still on the stack. However, any spells on the stack as Ethersworn Canonist comes into play have already been "played" by that point, so they're not affected by it.

That's wrong.
The first spell to _resolve_ is the one cascaded into.
The first spell that is _played_ is the one with cascade.
If you play a spell (nonartifact) with cascade with the Canonist out, you start cascading.
When you find a card (nonartifact), the Canonist prevents you from playing it, and you put all the cards removed with cascade on the bottom of your library as normal.

HER ABILITY IS A CONSTANT ABILITY, PREVENTING OTHER PLAYERS ON THEIR TURNS AS WELL. YES SHE MESSES UP CASCADE. BUT THAT EFFECT LEAVES WHEN SHE LEAVES PLAY.

if you cast a spell on your turn, can you also cast a spell on your opponents?

Canonist eats removal for breakfast. Then returns for supper with Sanctum Gargoyle.

This is such a rigged card. A 2/2 for 2, with an ability that shuts down your opponents? Ugh, I hate this card on principle.

I'd use it if I had it though. =_=

My only question is this is a 3of or 4of in an artifact deck.

how about playing a playset of this and howling mine, in a full artifact deck limiting your opponent to only play one card a time??? that would go good wouldnt it??

Tighten the lockdown with Erayo, Soratami Ascendant fliped into Erayo's Essence.

@A3Kitsune:
According to what I heard, Canonist's effect keeps you from successfully casting more than one non-artifact spell. If the first one is countered, it wasn't successfully cast, so you can still play another spell.

Granted, it would be an extreme lockdown early in the game when mana output is low, but by the time your opponents have a decent amount of lands to use they'll be able to just play a cheap spell and then throw a big one down.

please diachronos do not post things that you "heard" since they can be completely incorrect and confusing such as in this case.

Very restrictive indeed. This is really for the Blue White Control. It shuts down those quick decks. Plus add Meddling Mage in the equation, you have already made a strong combo stopper deck.

now, people mentioning the card, erayo, soratami ascendant.... notice the similarities in the art? looks like someone had a little rebirth.

"Cascade" is worded "you MAY CAST it without paying its mana cost". Ethersworn Canonist counts all spells cast from all zones, whether it be your hand, exile, or your graveyard. Cascade, however, only goes into effect "when you cast spell ". Therefore, If the Cascading spell was a non-artifact spell, and the would-be spell you cascaded into was also non-artifact, you could not play the latter. Ethersworn Canonist counts spells that were CAST, not ones that resolve, so because you had already cast the cascading spell, you could not cast the one that was cascaded into.

It's obscene that this has a 2/2 body instead of a 1/1.

Hey there Ethersworn Canonist. Are you ready for a casual Combo? Great! Knowledge Pool. How do you combo, you ask? Well you see, if they cast a non-artifact spell, it gets exiled by the Knowledge Pool, and they get to cast a spell inside the Knowledge Pool instead! Ohh wait, they are only allowed to play one spell? Thats a shame.. looks like nothing happened. Next turn, play an overpowered artifact like Darksteel Relic to grab their non-artifact spell!

Obviously, this goes from "complete lockdown" to "Ill take your good artifacts while you get my cheap sucky ones" if you meet an artifact deck.

I run two in my Esper Deck. I always seem to pull it late game for some reason. But when I do get it early game and my opponent plays two spells I'm like "nope". Great card completely shuts down Elves 4.5*

Ugh, you know a rules text is badly worded when the rulings basically have to restate it. I love this card for my artifact decks, but it gets me into so many arguments with my opponents.

You say I can play only one land and cast only one spell each turn?
Well that's just dandy.

don't rope yourself together when you play this, like i saw a lot with inexperienced players throwing this in white weenie decks.

This is a pretty good sideboard card against storm. It prevenst them from going off and puts them on a clock.
