I think this is the worst hedge-mage.

When Duergar Hedge-Mage comes into play, if you control two or more Mountains, you may have been better off just decking Shatter.
When Duergar Hedge-Mage comes into play, if you control two or more Plains, you would have been better off just decking Disenchant.

Wouldn't it be nice to kill both a bitterblossom and a Tidehollow Sculler against B/W Tokens, or Bitterblossom and Warhammer/Mask of Riddles vs Fae. The problem with comparing it to shatter and disenchant is that neither of them give you card advantage.

This is actually the best Hedge-Mage, and it's the only one that saw any significant play in Constructed. It's a pretty good sideboard card.

It's a slightly more expensive Disenchant, but that means there is the possibility that you can hit 2 things at once, and you get a 2/2 body to stick around afterward. It's really pretty good.

@Treima: Really? I didn't know Shatter or Disenchant came with a 2/2 body.

Even if it could only hit one or the other this would be good, the fact that it can hit both if you meet the requirements makes it sick. This is even viable in mono red, as a red Viridian Shaman.

Yup, it is better than manic vandal because the artifact destruction is a may effect.

I started playing this guy in EDH multiplayer and he's just ridiculous. I hit an enchantment and artifact every time. The 2/2 body is just a bonus (one that usually ends up chump blocking).

This is by far the most powerful of the hedge-mages. Destroying two permanents upon entering play and having a body that likes beeing reanimated is pretty neat.

wait, people think this card sucks?

if played correctly in edh, it's one of the easiest 3-for-1s i've seen. It's 3 cmc so you can recur it with sun titan, its 2 power so you can reveilark it (or just use karmic guide), it is even generous enough to have a may clause so you can throw it out whenever. 2 power isn't very big, but it's still a chump blocker to stop certain swords from hitting you (namely feast and famine), something you can sac to a grave pact, etc. much better than using disenchant or the like.

even in constructed this saw play when it was in standard, and is even a viable sideboard card in modern, mostly for boros aggro decks where they just want as many creatures as possible, and the fact that this isn't instant speed doesn't matter when they get a 2/2 with it.

The whole Hedge-Mage cycle was a lot of fun. Flexible, and you were almost guaranteed one of two handy effects on an appropriately sized creature. And when top decked, they had a tendency to cause a lot of damage, especially this guy. An artifact, and enchantment, and potentially a creature, all for three. Nice.

With a pair of Sacred Foundry in the Battlefield, this is an enchantment removal for monoRed... You don't need to actually play any other white card, you can play it in monocolored deck! I think it's worth really a lot, and an answer to all the people complaining that monoRed doesn't have enchantment removal...! I'm surprised that nobody said this!

3-for-1 @ 3 mana is *really* impressive. Running this may require expensive lands to go off on time; but dropping it t4-6 when the opponent has both an enchant and an arti is also a valid tactic to ensure the card advantage; still leaving open mana for other stuff! Good times.

For you guys complaining about how much better his effect is on other cards: He's a Wear//Tear on Gray Ogre legs! There are minor drawbacks to needing two mountains and/or plains, but that's not really a big deal, generally speaking.
