Fallowsage's evil twin. I like the former more, probably, he fits more to the merfolk-based decks (as most of them are blue) and can be used multiple times per turn, while this guy usualy gets in the action when your opponent has empty hand. 2*

I have used Fallowsage. I have not used this. I guess that means I think the former is better...honestly, this guy's just a little too slow...maybe at 3, I'd think twice about him.

If he were blue I might use him. As a black... There just aren't enough other black merfolk cards that orbit around the "When this guy is tapped" mechanic.

Um... reusable way to make your opponent discard during his or her turn? Obviously, this would require a combo, but holy crap. I think this is amazing.

He is a reusable, instant-speed discard spell. Sure, he can be Shocked but I don't care. I'm sticking a Freed From the Real on this guy and going to TOWN.

I might try him. He still works with the generic Drowner of Secrets and Merrow Commerce (among other) combos and in this case because you're relying on a large board position, getting rid of that removal and wrath type cards is important.
Add surgespanner to the mix for reusable "removal"

I mean, you could just Seeker of Skybreak him on your opponent's draw step... after tapping him with one of a multitude of ways, one of which includes attacking.
Even flavorwise, the inspiration (hehe) behind the functionality seems to be the same:
"Dreams of dark nights to come are said to stir in the minds of scheming hollowsages." >"Dreams of dark nights to come are said to inspire the minds of scheming hollowsages."
Fittingly, the Springleaf Drum from Lorwyn that's played by Goblins works just as nicely with him as the Springleaf Drum from Theros that's played by Satyrs does with the like-minded from Born of the Gods.
