The casting cost does seem a tad high. If you want the best bang for your buck essentially, you can just get other 3-4 cost creatures with higher toughness like a Corrosive Mentor. It's 1/3 and gives all of your black creatures wither. I plan on making an elemental/warrior deck and I want to put him in though; if you have a Brighthearth Banneret out then 3 cmc for a 4/2 wither isn't as bad.

Not a bad card, not a good card, not an interesting card. Wither is ok, but only during blocking when you are an X/2. I might play him in Pauper sometime, good in limited OBV.
