A narrow card, but well worth the cost, b/c in the right deck he's a monster

Not all that great, but it definitely has potential in EDH.

Yes please, may I have some more?

how is a card that is probably making all your cards unblockable not great?

He's excellent late game backup plan in my GreenBlue Lorescale Coatl deck. By the time he comes into play, one or two unchecked swings from a pumped up creature usually ends things quickly.

I don't know. He's expensive as hell and easy to get rid of. Especially annoying when you think you're perfectly safe and launch a full-scale (heh) attack and he get's killed / burned / bounced. Way to get slaughtered.

he is expensive and fairly easy to get rid of. that being said, when I get him out in my merfolk deck I have usually won the game.

He's the most expensive mentor for a reason.
I'm a bit irked that he's so small though.

Very good, and everyone seems to be complaining that its easy to kill. Need I remind you you're playing blue? You should have counterspells in your deck if you want to take advantage of blue at all. A blue deck without counters is like a green deck without creatures. 4.5/5 for its incredible power.

if your deck is fast and the turn this enters the battlefield, you swing for the win, you should consider Sleep.
its blue's overrun. its cheaper than this mentor and if you dont kill your opponent, his creatures dont untap that turn so its pretty safe too.

Overrun-type card for blue.

A little vulnerable, but he's blue, so he has an array of on-color weapons that can protect him. Overall, a nice late-game bomb.

just slap some totem armour on him and swing for the win.

Good idea, but...6 mana 2/2 people...

This is Merfolk EDH to a tee. Throw Lightning Greaves on him and call it a day.

why are you using him in a merfolk deck tantallum? They should already all be unblockable much more effeciently...

With all the lords that can pump it up, this tends to be at least be 4/4 when you cast it. If nothing else, this card usually wins the game when you cast it, so it's not like size really matters unless you intend to equip it with Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots

5Blue: Deepchannel Mentor. Your blue creatures are unblockable until the opponent finds creature removal.

1Blue: Spreading Seas an opponent's land. You draw a card, and your Merfolk creatures are unblockable, thanks to grandaddy Lord of Atlantis. Your opponent needs to find enchantment removal, or to kill every one of your Lords (which they'd be trying to do anyway).

Ironically, this means the blue deck that benefits the *least* from this Merfolk is... Merfolk.

If you want a solution to your "Dies easily" problems, then just get Sun Quan, Lord of Wu. He does the same thing, to all creatures (not just blue), and he's a 4/4.

But he is also more than 10x more expensive... but we'll keep that between you and me

CMC: 6
P/T: 2/2

... what?

After thinking about it, this is essentially Overrun in blue since the ability is so sick.

If you're paying 6 mana for a 2/2, it better win you the game. Fortunately, this can do that.

Run with Seahunter.

Why are Mentors so underrated?

@salient - Also consider Aquitects Will, if you're talking about merfolk tribal.
