A personal favourite. It might not be extremely good competitively, but in a casual match it's always worth the look on your opponent's face when they finish reading the text.

hmm, anti-banefire perhaps, question: since you have protection from red, and banefire is unpreventable, what ends up happening?
either banefire fails or protection doesnt protect
so either this is a banefire counter, or banefire can be used to destroy cards like progenitcis

This is pretty amusing. It's like a color-focused fog.
@ Dingo777 Actually, since the card gives you protection from red you are no longer a legal target. If a spell has no legal targets it fizzles (counters itself, even if it is uncounterable). If you gave yourself Protection from Red before they played the Banefire, they would not be allowed to target you with it (ditto for Progenitus). Thus, it is not a question of preventing the damage but rather a question of whether the targets are legal. I reference rule 607.2b of the Comprehensive rulebook.

I'm not sure which rule book you're using but the rules acording to http://www.crystalkeep.com/magic/rules/summaries/indexes/rule-general-607.php#607
607.2b is talking about replacement effects, and exiled cards. Nothing to do with countering uncounterable spells.
Beautiful art. I feel like running a bunch of these just so I can see the pretty kitty.

About Banefire. It's pretty clear. Banefire can't be countered by spells or abilities. It says that because it can be countered by the rules for no having legal targets.

This card and the Shah of naar Isle has me convinced of a future Arabian nights expansion....which would have me super stoked.

Another card that is excellent because of its versatility.
It deals with cards that target you as a player IE discard and burn. It can fog and it can flash in a 3/3, which is often enough pretty relevant.
'Futureshifted' seems to be the dumping ground for ideas that everyone has had but that they've never gotten around to doing.

This will stop Banefire - BayushiKazemi is correct. If a spell has an illegal target(s), it counters itself, whether or not it says it cannot be countered.

Banefire is an interesting case, because if it could resolve against a player with protection from red, the damage would get through the pro red, since protection prevents damage. That point is moot since Banefire only has one target and the target must be legal on declaration and resolution, and it won't be legal on resolution so it will be countered. A fireball with two targets will not be countered unless both targets become illegal though.

The sex tiger comes in the blink of an eye, but never fear dear player; he always uses protection.

How many people first read "Seth's tiger" when they looked at the card name?
What? Protection? For me? ...Gee, thanks. *Pets kitty*

I hate you Tarmogoyf. Why did you make this set so hard to get ahold of?

@Shiizu: Even better when paired with Deadeye-Navigator. Potentially gain protection from all 5 colors for the whole turn!

BayushiKazemi's kind of right, it doesn't counter itself, the game counters it, but that's just semantics. Anyway, that's why Banefire says "cannot be countered by spells or abilities." It's so the game can still counter it. For contrast, Supreme Verdict does not have that clause because there are no times when it would need to be countered by the game.

Aw. I wish the reminder text specified that I couldn't be blocked by anything of the chosen color as well. Since, you know, it's technically true...

Best paired with Momentary Blink and countermagic.
