Four mana to cast and three to activate to prevent 2 damage to you. Horribly inefficient. Samite Healer only cost 2 to cast and nothing to activate (save for a tap) to prevent a damage to you OR a creature. And it was COMMON! Granted, Conservator allows you to prevent up to 2 damage, but... I can think of a lot better ways to spend 4 colorless mana. Like on a Juggernaut.

They should have stuck with the prevention of loss of life. Oh well. Pearl Shard is infinitely better.

I can't help but feel like the Oracle text might be off...
The difference can be seen between Megrim and Liliana's Caress (besides mana cost).

The original printing made the card far better as it used the words 'loss of up to 2 life' rather than 'prevent the next 2 damage'... :/

I remember way back when, probably 1994 or 1995, I was reading a copy of Scrye magazine. They had a section where they ask people to make their own Magic cards, using existing magic cards, scissors, tape/glue and either print from magazines or newspapers, or their own handwriting (remember this was before Photoshop).
One issue I remember used this card's art, except putting a happy face in the middle. The person called it "Happy Disk" or something, and its ability was "Tap to win the game! Have a nice day!" I always thought that was hilarious.
