I take it that if it was a creature due to some other effect, like Karn's Touch, it would still return to your hand if killed?

Since that card states that it retains its abilities, yes, it would still return to your hand if killed.

Every card in Time Spiral was a throwback to at least one previously printed card.

You can use its ability in response to artifact destruction to bring it back to your hand.
Given, it's a little expensive as a response to removal, but in green, it's not outside the realm of possibility.
