Hellbent was a great idea! Make up for your card disadvantige with above the curve spells and creatures, sold! But sadly it came out like threshold in that it's sucky before and ok after. This card being case and point. Maybe if it 1 less, or it's starting damage was one higher, or the damage couldn't be prevented, SOMETHING!
5 damage for 4 in a burn deck isn't TERRIBLE... Especially since you'll probably be top decking a burn deck fairly quickly if you build it without Howling Mines or Font of Mythos.
As far as the Hellbent mechanic goes... I've never run across any worth playing a Hellbent deck to use. But if you are really determined to run Hellbent, try a B/R deck and combo it with madness cards and Oppression so you're not the only one top decking and the discard won't hurt you as much.

Remember people, the norm back then was Volcanic Hammer which wasn't even an instant! An instant version would have cost , and this costs . Reasonable in its time, but not like it was even good then.

Compare Lava Axe, which is a sorcery, but you don't need hellbent.

@Ideatog: Except Lava Axe can't target creatures... This is a reasonable burn spell, but Brimstone Volley says it could probably cost 3.
I'm expecting this to be reprinted in Sorin vs Tibalt. Tibalt will likely have some Hellbent and the flavor is just like him.
