I have difficulty in seeing what artifact destruction has to do with the spirit of a woman who died of cold.

If only she was as awesome as she is in the books. In the Kamigawa novels she kills something like half an army by freezing them to death one by one. Good luck managing that with the card.
I pay close attention to Japanese myth and legend and I was surprised that Yuki-Onna ended up being Red. but from a story perspective she was a cold hearted vengeful spirit, I guess thats her red aspect. the ability to destroy artifacts repeatedly wasn't too much of a concern back in Kamigawa. The cast of 4 mana after bouncing her was a bit steep, considering what Arcane and spirit spells were available at the time.
Easily my favorite art among the Onna but probably the least useful ability.

My favorite Japanese mythical creature, and one of the better 'Onna'. I am a bit confused as to the artifact destruction. Yes, its a red thing, but it just doesn't match the flavor of the card in my opinion. Ice, snow and blizzards have never been associated with artifact destruction in Magic, and in real life myths of the Yuki-Onna they spend more time doing things like abducting children.

Glacial Ray, Frostwielder, Frostling, Frost Ogre, and the Yamabushi shaman's techniques are based on ice as well, like Kumano, Master Yamabushi.
