It costs {9}, which means you'll need some alternate method to get him into play if you're going to combo with him. I recommend Tinker. Then you could just go with a very creature-heavy deck that can negate or destroy other creatures. You and the Gargoyle will be pretty much safe from removal (barring an unfortunate Acidic Slime, but you can't stop everything) and most of their hand will probably be useless, so with some half-decent creatures you should be able to just pressure the opponent into submission.

If it absorbs light, shouldn't it be pitch black?

Absorbing light doesn't mean that you remove it, it means that you simply take it.
Like absorb in Pokémon.

I am the only one who thinks it is a nice reanimation objective against combo? I know Iona will probably will serve better but still...

Things that absorb light wouldn't reflect it, and as vision functions by detecting reflected light the gargoyle would in fact appear black.

it would see competitive play...if it didn't cost so much. 9 mana is absurd and they knew it when they designed it.

Since it only counters noncreature spells and costs no colored mana, I could definitely see him in a Animar EDH-deck. Animar deck should be able to cover most of their needs in removals and effects through creatures, and with the added bonus of reducing the cost of this card greatly . This guy could theoretically delay a sweeper as well, since your opponent will have to waste a spell to get it through, and thus keeping Animar healthy for a little while longer.

Should've said "nonartifact".

How about this for a silly combo:
this, omen machine, rule of law/arcane labotory. Or Ethersworn canonist to keep to the artifact theme and allow you to play spells.

It's not that bad actually. I run 2 of these in a eldrazi deck. Mana really isn't a problem so, ya.
Ill give 3/5

Combos well with Ethersworn Canonist against most decks. Use Master Transmuterto get it out.
Probably not the most efficient or reliable combo out there but it is effective.

@theonlymoocow - In an Animar, Soul of Elements EDH deck. It's realistic to play him for only a few colorless mana or totally free. Plus you won't be playing too many non-creature spells in said deck, so he really only hoses your opponents.

Removal dies to him.

@Weretarrasque: Only if its absorbing every color of visible light. A thing appears to be the colors it doesn't absorb, so yes, if it were to absorb every color of light, it should be pitch black. However, the flavor text never explicitly states what kinds of light it absorbs.
