wow, who rated this card with 5/5? it's not that bad, yet in many cases - unless you combine this one with creatures which have further effects like lifelink - Blaze or improved duplicates of this sorcery are more useful than this instant.

I suppose you want to cast this on attack most of the time, so play Balduvian Rage instead.
um seems to me firebreathing gives about the same effect... well you can only spend red mana there but in a mono red deck it's superior.

I wanted to cast this using zero mana for the X value, just to activate another card, I figured I could cast it with it benefitting the target +0/+0...on the arcade game it said I needed 1 untapped mana to cast, and although I had one untapped, it wouldn't let me, anyone know why?

Although Firebreathing offers the advantage of near permanence on the battlefield, it doesn't have the innate quality of Flash.
Thus, this Instant, although very costly and not all that worthwhile without abilities like first strike, trample, etc, it can be played with the bonus of being unexpected.
When Firebreathing sits on the battlefield, players can plan for it accordingly or destroy it more readily without being blue control.

I wish this would get reprinted in the core set again...
@rockkroc I also got hit by that silly oversight in Duels of the Planeswalkers. As I recall, it would allow you to set an X of 0 if you had at least two lands free. However, try doing it with just one mountain and it will refuse to play the spell.
An X of 0 is fine by Magic's rules.

A variable pump at instant speed. I see nothing really wrong with this.

I'm having troubl seeing how Firebreathing is better - mana-per-mana, it'd be about the same cost, Enrage can use any color mana to pay the X cost, and unlike Firebreathing, Enrage is at instant speed allowing for surprise.

People are right its not the best card. For what it is thou it is great. It is a classic 4th turn 5th turn finisher to a red winnie deck. Just because there is a better card for same mana balduvian rage.
