5 mana for THIS?

Not quite, Mode. This card means you put a regeneration shield on one of your creatures--the effect of removing all damage, removing it from combat, and tapping it only happens if the creature is destroyed.

I was wondering why an otherwise handy effect card had such a dismal rating, then that 'five mana' jumped out and spinning heel kicked me in the honey bunches of oats. Now I'm just filled with unstoppable rage that I can't rate this thing a 0.

Awful card, incredible art. I bought a print of it back in the day, and Cavotta included a note in the box saying that he too loved the art he'd made and was bummed that it wound up on such a crap card.

@Mode
Regenerating doesn't tap the creature until it would be destroyed or takes lethal damage.
@chains
They were thinking there are a lot of 1 and 2 cost arcane spells that will allow you to regenerate your white spirits when you late game Wrath of God your top decking opponent. It's not a tournament card, it's a freeform card to stop crying about it.
@True Yes, it's a little overpriced in the mana cost, but if you're running a deck that uses the massive legendary spirits then lock n load. The ability to regenerate ANYTHING on your field is going to be expensive.

It is overcosted, but a lot of people seem to misunderstand the rules for regeneration.

Regeneration is a shield that lasts until end of turn. That shield replaces the next destruction event to happen to that creature with the removal of all damage marked on the creature, removal of the creature from combat, and tapping the creature.

You can play spirits and sorceries during your main phase and put those shields on your creatures for your combat phase. It's actually a pretty good effect.

It was too bad that Wizards was being too careful about making sure Spirit-Arcane was not unacceptably powerful.

On the other hand, most of the players I've run into, upon being introduced to Spirit-Arcane through one of my decks, often speculate that the mechanic might have been extremely powerful. Especially nowadays where most removal allows regeneration, this card could get to be a problem..... somewhat.

What a shame. It would have made for fun gameplay at 2 or 3 mana, or with a respectable body, like Briarknit Kami.

either it should have higher P/T or less cmc

edit: @OpenSeasonNoobs: Dang you're right! Sorry, that was really dumb. Of course the trigger only kicks in once the creature dies. Should have known better how regeneration works by then :P

Aside from the ridiculously overcosted 2/1 body, you have to regenerate something, which means are forced to tap one of your creatures if your opponent doesn't have any.

Of course, if you got some Arcane Instants you'll be able to save your creatures easily from any harm, but that doesn't mean a card using such an effect has to be made unplayable.

It's cute. But you're not worth 5 to me. Wouldn't you have to play Instants to get this to work? Wouldn't the creature you wish to regenerate already be dead and gone before you could play a sorcery speed card in your Mainphase 2?

Would have been a great card if it cost 1White or something like it should have.

This really should have a higher toughness.

Consider that you get a 2/1 for White at uncommon. That means that this card's ability costs 4.
