Well it's not strictly worse than cancel. Say your opponent played Curse of Echoes on you. If you play a cancel to counter one of his spells, he can use the curse of echo copy to play a cancel on your cancel. If you play a mystic denial, that won't work.

@A3kitsune: Don't forget that this is from Portal. There weren't any instants, but a lot of the sorceries were cast at instant speed.
