While outclassed by today's standards, a 4/4 flyer that could, at the cost of a card, dodge any form of removal, including non-targeted effects, is not bad at all.

The problem with this card is, it's a victim of Wizard's decision to increase the power level of creatures.
I remember opening one of these when Exodus came out and had just started playing, and it just won me game after game. In ~1998, 5/5 for sure. Now, I'd say it's only a 3.5/5. A shame, really. I still love this guy!

Then combat damage stopped stacking.
Now I can't really say one is definitively more powerful than the other.

The fact that it's possible to rescue it without spend any mana is worth the loss of a card. I think this should have been a 5/5 or something like it, but in those days a 5/5 for 6CMC was considered overpowered, like, say, Exalted Dragon from the same set. For the same reason, Mahamoti Djinn wasn't reprinted for long time... However, I don't see a lot of similar mechanism (the non-mana rescue) nowadays, luckly because it could be very annoying if used often! I wish I own a couple of them...
