Nice art, but mostly useless as a card...why were these rare...

The laces are not 'mostly useless' they are useful in or against any deck that has cards that care about color. As to why they were rare, I'd like to know that myself.

Could be useful if you're running creatures with protection from a colour (Example: Opponent Lightning Bolts your Stillmoon Cavalier, play this in response). Rares used to mean weird effects with drawbacks that, in the right deck could be downright ridiculous. Instead we now expect rares to flat out win you the game.

Awsome card to trade away to someone.....then you feel like you have to confess or something.

They're rare because they either are too strong or have too narrow of an effect to be useful if you get lots of them. It's the latter case here, which is unfortunate.
That's a nice coral snake though.

I want to get this card and play it for absolutely no value. I hope to utterly confuse my opponent as to why I did it.

Me: "I play Deathlace on my Bears. Combat phase, I swing with them."
Opponent: "Hmm. I let it through."
Me: "Cool, your turn."
Opponent: "Why did you play Deathlace if you weren't going to use it?"
Me: "That's not something you need to know."

It's not too bad, but color hate isn't as common as it was back in the day, And it won't do much now other than prevent Doom blade and the like.
