I find it interesting how it's effect removes a counter from itself then puts a new one on another creature, rather than directly shifting an existing counter. I'm sure there's a combo to exploit that with, but I can't think it right now.

It's called Doubling Season.

The crazy thing is that they made such a weak creature cost 2Green. I have only a single deck that would ever consider this guy at 1Green, but he still wouldn't make the cut. My +1/+1 counter deck has Aquastrand Spider, Kavu Predator and Arcbound Stinger competing for the two-drop slot, and that is before you factor in the hydras that cost Variable ColorlessGreen.

"The crazy thing is that they made such a weak creature cost 2Green." says the person who must not have played during stronghold... Spikes, while not as rage-inducing as Slivers, were a strong type back in the day. The fact that they all had this ability, and could transfer couters between them was great. Add in the fact that many could do things with these counters (see spike feeder), and it made combat very bothersome. Am I saying it was a tier 1 tournement deck? No. But you've got to remember that this was well before the powercreep that we know today. This was, at worst, a grey ogre, with the potential to buff, or be buffed by, another creature. A fine card for the time.
