This card is ridiculously expensive for an uncommon. Glad its not banned or restricted in legacy / vintage yet though.

On one hand, it saves you a huge amount of mana and if you're lucky you get twice the amount of creatures out every turn thanks to this artifact. It's also charged up quite fast to the most needed point, for example if your deck has a big amount of three-drops. Another thing that makes this card that strong is that you don't have any requirements for accordant permanents that could produce the colors of the card you can put into play with the vial. I'm curious why this card was decided to stay uncommon despite playtesting, it must have been already very noticeable back then.

Not only is it a mana pump(essentially, although not able to work with mana), it also gives all your creatures flash and makes them uncounterable (well almost)

"this card is a really good way to get progenitus out"
Ya, while ur waiting 10 turns to get our ur win con, I would have found a way to remove the artifact, or simply beat you to a bloody pulp in that time.
Not good for getting out high cost creatures, but amazing at getting out lower cost creatures.

BelloAbril
★★☆☆☆ (2.0/5.0)(2 votes)
And why would you screw this artifact by messing with counters using extremely fragile and expensive habilities?
It doesnt combo with Gilden Bairn at all. Also in 1.X, 1.5 and 1.0 environment the last thing you want to do normally is waiting 123123 turns to play a fattie, this guy is meant to keep at 2 or maybe 3 counters. Aggro doesnt want to run ridiculous 10/10 creatures that are impossible to play unless 'cheating' them into the table retardedly like this.
Merfolk and Goblin decks loves this one.

I don't know Bello, I wouldn't say that it "doesn't combo with Gilder Bairn." The artifact may be at its best in the early game, but going from 3 counters to 6 and then dropping a Silvos, Rogue Elemental on turn 4 never hurt anyone's feelings, lol.
I agree though, this thing is probably at its best in the 2nd or 3rd turn, dropping solid creatures while you use available mana to either create a numerical advantage or remove threats.

I ran a 4-of of this, Belbe's Portal and Dragon's Arch in a deck with urzatron and Cloudposts with Mana Cylix and Prismatic Lens to mana fix myself in a deck that used the dragon legends and it was disgustingly good. All I had to do was survive to turn 5 or 6 and it exploded. It wasn't really a good duel deck per se, but in multiplayer when you aren't dropping aggro threat early on people tend to ignore you.
The point of the card isn't to put charge counters on as fast as you possibly can, the point of it is to drop it turn one as basically a suspend, then 7 turns later you let it sit at 6 charge counters. Just make sure all the big nasties you put into your deck are the same color, the same type, and the same CMC and the rig I set up above will work wonders. You probably won't even need the cylixes or lenses, I only used those so I could use the abilities of the cards I had out since I used the dragons that had the "When this deals combat damage to a player you may pay (one of a given color) and (ability)."

As of June 28th 2010, I did a search for Trinket Mageable artifacts, and sorted it by community rating, descending...
Simply one of the most broken and insane cards ever printed. Good example of how nuts things were in Darksteel, years after the lessons of urza's bock were supposedly learned.
As another poster says, breaks just about every convention in magic. For 1.

Shouldn't it at least have required you to sacrifice it or remove the counters as well when activating the second ability?

Just for the sake of breaking ALL the Magic rules with a single deck, I run a couple of these in my Dredge deck! Nothing like throwing out a Stinky Imp during my opponents combat phase to kill one his fatties, just to dredge him up again on my draw!
On a related note, I love doing things that make my friends look like they are about to puke!

My god, you can tap it first turn to play an Ornithopter for free! Oh, wait... ___
Actually, thinking about that, you can use it to flash in an Ornithopter or a Memnite as a blocker last second to mess with your opponent if you drop this first turn... That's actually pretty cool that even with 0 charge counters, this can be used for a ridiculous effect like that.

Ok, for the last few years I've looked at this card and never understood why it was good. I knew it was good for some reason and refused to look up why since I should learn to know which cards are good on my own. To me it looked like you put a creature into play at around the same time as you would with a standard curve.
Today it finally hit me. There's no clause that keeps it from working only once. For some reason I thought you had to sacrifice the vial (makes sense flavor-wise, you break it open for the power inside) but no. It essentially allows you to play as many creatures as you want around the standard curve while keeping your mana open.
I wonder if R&D made the same mistake and forgot to make it sacrifice itself or remove its charge counters on use

It really should have been a rare card at the very least. The beauty of this card is that you don't have to put a charge counter on it if you don't want to. If you have a deck that revolves around a lot of creatures with the same mana cost you can just crank them into play like crazy. This card, with Skullclamp and Cranial Plating are 3 of the best (and broken) cards ever printed.
