if it was a 3/2 or 2/2 I'd bump up thte drake to a 3 star. If it buffed its defense, it'd be a 3 or 3.5 star. But right now this drake just doesn't have what it takes. The fact the discard is random is way too painful for 2 extra damage. Even recursive.

If you're hellbent, you can't even use its ability. Speaking of Hellbent, try rakdos pit dragon instead.

If it didn't require 1 mana AND a discard, I'd probably use it. If it had first strike, I'd probably use it. If activating it's ability gave it first strike, I'd probably use it. As it stands, no. I'm sure it has a place in a Madness deck, but even then there's better discard engines.

Should have been a 2/3, the ability should have been free and been choose and discard, and it should have given the drake first strike as well. Even in Tempest's time this was awful.

Andrew's Occasional Random Card of the Day #11 - 7/7/2011 - Canyon Drake

Well this is certainly an interesting little guy. A quick bit of research shows a fair bit of discard effects in Tempest block, especially as it pertains to using discard as a cost. I'd then expect some graveyard effects as well, but I'm really not seeing them. Odyssey block had a lot of discard as well, but had threshold, madness and flashback to go along with it. I'm not seeing anything of the sort in Tempest—just a bunch of discard, and much of it random. For instance, on Canyon Drake.

He's smaller than a Furnace Whelp or a Dragon Whelp, and has a weaker firebreathing ability . . . unless that discard is to somehow be used advantageously. Which is why I was looking for something that would take advantage of it, but it's just not there. I guess there just must have been a discard theme and someone thought this guy made sense. At rare. Yeah.

Another interesting facet of Tempest block was the flavor text 'telling a story'. The pitfall of that is that we really don't get 'a story' about the drake from its flavor text . . . just about Ertai and that apparently he was doing something with runes in a canyon.

I love the art, it's very unique.

Terrible as a rare and for even casual constructed formats.
Makes for fun Limited games, though: Is your opponent really scared of that 9-damage punch, or does he have the Shock?
Also, Quinton Hoover art!

As a Homelands or Fallen Empires rare? Sure. As a TEMPEST rare, though?
