2.5/5 stars just for the synergy with the -1/-1 counter theme of shadowmoor. Although its way too pricey to use its effect early or even mid-game, you can do some fun combos with this card and things like Dusk Urchins and Necroskitter.

Good in an EDH deck, as well as with creatures such as Morselhoarder.

Cheap to cast, expensive to use. But it's still a nice way of shrinking those gargantuan monsters down to little cute puppies, eventhough it might take you a few turns.

"You worthless pile of spine!" lol, that is a great way to make a minion feel useless.

So the reason Phyrexia uses spinal implants is that it allows them to remotely torture their subjects for failure.
That's brilliant.

Volrath must've had a hell of a lot of black mana available for him to be so powerful with cards like this.

This would still be a good play today if the casting cost and activation cost were switched.
I like it. It counters creatures with persist, buffs creatures with undying, messes up combat and kill small utility creatures (even if they have regeneration or are indestructible or whatnot).

This flavor text finally explains to me why Greven is such a dick to Vhati il-Dal....
