I love Unicorns, and I love MTG. But I hate MTG Unicorns. Is that weird?

Izzet's right: original wording would give you X-1 life if you refuse to pay upkeep, and X life if it leaves play any other way, where X is the number of age counters.

Ok, so they made this creature a little bit better by Oracling it. Whoop de doo.

The artwork is nice and in its time it saw marginal play. Still wish they had gone with something like "when its upkeep is paid gain life equal to the number of age counters on revered unicorn" like most creatures it would stand a good chance of being killed off but the mana to return cost might have been favourable enough to allow it to cause burn and aggro some problems.

I suppose the 2/3 body for 2CMC is good enough to give this something, but the ability seems like a negative to me rather than a positive. I mean, you bring this put turn two and...
Then let's say it dies turn 7. Washing out the actual casting cost as paying for the body, at this point you've payed 10 mana for 5 life. I mean, Angel's Mercy is rated ONE star and it's 4 mana for 7 life. So I don't think I'm too far off base saying that this is basically just a 2/3 with cumulative upkeep; the life gain is pretty much negligable.

Turn 3: pay 1
Turn 4: pay 2
Turn 5: pay 3
Turn 6: pay 4
