Wooden Sphere has been around since 4th edition and the fact that it's an uncommon has me scratching my head. There are much better life gain artifacts out there. The only plus is it could be used as infinite life gain in a card engine. Although if you have a combo giving infinite mana you can probably do something better then life gain.

There are similar cards where you don't have to pay for the effect, like Kraken's Eye

Actully, lordfinbar, Wooden Sphere has been around since Alpha. You can thank Mirrodin for finally getting rid of this card.

Wow, you guys need to call Wizards of the Coast and ask them about this card. Wooden Sphere was part of the orginal, strong, awesome MTG cards for a reason. Unlike Kraken's Eye or other cards where one life is automatically triggered by playing a certain color spell, Wooden Sphere allows you to use ALL of your open mana for 1 life each. Amazingly awesome lifegain ability, especailly in green!!!

Why is the art so pretty for such a useless card?

Look at tommybthe1. After all these years, this card is still catching noobs.

WotC apparently reprinted this card because it allows new players to learn that this card and this cycle aren't as useful as they thought. But Wurm's Tooth is probably better for this purpose.

This is one of those cards that makes you grit your teeth when you see it reprinted, because 99% of new players misunderstand the mechanic and become disappointed or angry when you explain it to them.

"What do you mean I can't gain 6 life off my Llanowar Elves by tapping down all my forests? It never says you can do this only once per spell!!!" Redundant or no, I really wish they'd print "Activate this ability only once per spell" on it.

I think wizards is printing sucky cards like this on purpose, in order to teach new players what sucks and what doesn't.
They mean to make this card suck, just like they mean to make all the other 10 or so deceptively crappy cards in every set suck. Otherwise, new players would stumble upon great combos and the game wouldn't be as fun because it wouldn't require an understanding of the game. Just good cards.

I don't even get how anyone could misunderstand how this card works.
I love the original artwork and I give Wooden Sphere a 5/5 for that reason alone.
