I know why he and Eastern Paladin can't target permanents. Back in the day, before Planar Chaos (I'm looking at you, Reality Acid), Blue and Black had no means of enchantment control and very few, overcosted ways of destroying artifacts.

I don't like the 8th Edition crossover of flavor text and art of the two previous versions. Separately, the two previous incarnations were very different flavor-wise - but both very cool in their own way.
This artwork does not portray the power-hungry backstabber as the flavor text describes, like the 7th Edition one was. He looks like a cold-blooded Phyrexian killing machine like the Urza's Saga one was.
They should have just given him new flavor text, considering the Northern Paladin wasn't even in 8th Edition, and mention of Yawgmoth in a core set may be seen as uncouth.
