I remember when I was first learning to play, I started with portal and I remember when I got this guy in a pack. I wanted him cause he was so huge and I was soooo happy. Obviously I'm a more seasoned player now and I see this isnt the greatest but it made my day long ago. Only missing 4 cards to complete my portal set too. lol.

GONZO FAIRY-TALE ART. That shouldn't even be possible.

From Magic: the Gathering Official Encyclopedia, vol. 2, pag. 118: It's become traditional for every set to have super-huge blue creature. Thing from the Deep isn't all that great a card from a game-play standard, but as the biggest creature in the set, it gets a lot of attention.
Moreover, the artwork is just amazing!

A simplified Leviathan for newer players, this is a good card to teach novices about resource management, game clocks, and chump blocking. When will keeping it around become disadvantageous? How can you get it through with no trample? While not a good card per se, it's a nice choice for a set like Portal.
